Posts: 4179January 23, 2008 at 12:32 am #646427Reasonably priced, family resorts in NW Wisconsin are getting hard to come by. LOTS of them going condo these days.
Having said that, there are several nice places on LCO (such as Anglers Haven) that would put you in the middle of some good walleye, smallmouth, and crappie fishing. There are also a few places on the Flowage that are family frieldly, such as Treeland resort. The flowage is as multi-species as you’ll get in this area, with eyes, bass, ‘skis and pannies all available.
If you want to stay more to the south, you might consider a trip to Wissota. Walleyes, smallies, big crappies, cats, and plenty of toothy critters abound. There are a couple of places to stay, including Hideaway Resort and Lake Wissota Lodge. I do happen to know a good guide on the lake
<Disclaimer: I have never stayed at either of the Wissota resorts>
January 23, 2008 at 1:51 am #646281The Chip Flowage is a perfect destination, in my opinion. The fishing is quite good, and it’s one of the few lakes left that has a number of successful resorts on it. For family friendly, Johnson’s on Moore’s Bay is pretty good and I believe more affordable than Treelands. Though I have to say that Treelands is awfully nice! I’ve heard good things about R&R Bayview, too, and their breakfast can’t be beat. For a more fishing oriented but still family friendly camp I’d suggest Deerfoot. There are many others, but I’ve mentioned all those that I’ve visited. Good luck!
January 23, 2008 at 1:54 am #646283A couple other destinations worth mentioning is Lost Land/Teal and the Spider Lake Chain. I’ve had short stays on both but both resorts have changed hands since my visits. I know there are several options. Closer to Spooner is Big Sissabagama, which has very good fishing opportunities and is a neat lake. There is a fish fry on the north end (can’t remember the name of the place) that is out of this world!!

We love Ike Walton Lodge–but our fishing success has been limited.
????? You just must be having bad luck on Yellow. I have a place on Devils Lake (Just east of Yellow on the east side of WI 35) and I travel to Yellow when I want ot catch fish. I’d stay at Ike and move around alittle more the fish are there, plus you cant beat the buffet and Ike’s!
Just stay clear of Little yellow the current makes the ice on that lake dangerous!
January 23, 2008 at 4:59 am #646568I am going with Dean on this one. The Chetek chain has great non stop pan fishing. You can also catch Northerns in the 40+ range. A very nice number of Bass and Walleye to top it off. I have only been going up for 3 summers so I am still learning how to catch a walleye on purpose. Go to http://www.chetek.com/ and you can check out different resorts. Some of the sites also let you know what their availability is.
Good Luck,
FDR
January 23, 2008 at 5:05 am #646571My first choice for family fun and panfishing would be the chetek chain also. Second choice would be the flowage.

Posts: 6259January 23, 2008 at 11:39 am #646606I will throw my 2 cents in for Long Lake in Washburn county. Clean water for swimming great fishing for bass pike and walleye with a chance for trophy fish, pans everywhere. Resorts I would try would be Linconwood- Ross is a great host! The Pioneer would be two I would recomend. This lake is great for anything, water skiing, tubing, swimming, boating, fishing. Tons of great bars. I would suggest callind ASAP if you want a prime week on this lake or you might have to book for 2009. PM me if you want better info on resorts and some good fishing tips and a few fun things to do during the day….
January 23, 2008 at 9:07 pm #646811I would have to go with eyetroller and Dean…Chetek chain is amazing for catching tons of gills!! I always consider it the poorman’s Hayward…
Tons of different resorts and the price will be right. I will be making a trip up this summer myself. Good luck. Ted
Are you from Wisconsin Rapids by any chance? I knew someone from there with that name…
January 24, 2008 at 12:11 am #646884You have all been a lot of help–thank you very much. I am going to do some more research into all the places you suggested!
No BM I am from Vinton, IA

January 25, 2008 at 1:56 pm #647654Good…I developed a certain dislike for Jason White from Wisconsin Rapids…
He gave me a few beat downs on the wrestling mat in high school and I just haven’t been able to get over it yet…
18 years ago now…
j/k Nice to meet you!

March 4, 2008 at 7:39 pm #661854Well thanks again for all the advice. Hope the fishing is good this year on the Chetek Chain–it was hard to find a place this late in the game that had the right number of cabins on the week we wanted–but we finally did! We will be there the week of July 26th! Seems like a great area.

August 30, 2009 at 3:30 am #210016From todays Red Wing news paper:
Quote:
Brian Childs, the man accused of detonating a massive explosion on his Welch property, pleaded guilty Thursday to two felonies in the case that drew national attention.
Childs, 32, pleaded guilty to possession of an explosive with destruction of property and possession of an explosive or blasting agent without a permit or license.
Authorities were called Jan. 13, 2008, to his property after an explosion shook the area. Security personnel at the Prairie Island nuclear plant said the blast rattled windows at the guard station and reportedly tripped alarms at the plant.
Police obtained a video of the incident, in which a gunshot is heard and followed immediately by a large explosion. Authorities said shrapnel from the blast flew up to a quarter-mile.
Childs told investigators the explosion was generated when a .50 caliber rifle round struck a barrel containing 100 pounds of Tannerite, a substance he had purchased over the Internet. The barrel was placed inside a dump truck box, which blew to smithereens.
He was charged with multiple felonies, including causing an explosion with gross disregard for human life. The case was set for a Sept. 14 trial date.
Under a plea agreement reached with Assistant Goodhue County Attorney Chris Schrader, Childs must pay a $2,500 fine and $971 to the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Department for investigative costs.
Childs will be eligible for a stay of adjudication in the case — which could result in the convictions being wiped from his record — if he follows probationary terms and any sentencing conditions.
Schrader called the agreement “a fair and appropriate resolution.”
“The incident was extremely dangerous but was done without malice and without intent to injure any person or property, except an old dump truck box,” he said. “Hopefully the public and law enforcement are now more aware of the dangers of Tannerite, which is an explosive when mixed.”
Schrader added that the state requires a license or permit to possess an explosive. He said Childs was prohibited from possessing a firearm or explosive.
Childs did not return a call seeking comment. He will be sentenced Oct. 9.
