Looking for handgun

I’m in the market for a handgun. I know nothing about handguns except for my 44 Super Redhawk which is only good for porcupines and taking down old deerstands. Something compact, light, and cheap to shoot. Home safety. Any suggestions?

If you are looking for something cheap and fun to shoot, the Ruger MK 512 is good. I have fun with mine. If you are looking for something to carry also, I would probably get a 9mm. Cheap to shoot. I like Kahr and Glock. The Smith & Wesson Sigmas are good to. They all have models that are compact. And they are all fun to shoot.

I can vouch for the Smith Sigma and the Kahr. My Smith is a 9mm and the Kahr a PM 40. I love both guns! Very reliable, fun to shoot and easy to break down and clean.

I will second..or third, the S&W Sigma. The early models had a bad rap that has carried over (unjustifiably so) into the new models thus keeping the price low. I would argue the 9VE or 40VE Sigmas (newest version) are the best bang for the buck, literally! I have never had a FTF, FTL, or FTE with my Sigma. Given my load count is still int the 100’s not 1000’s since it is relatively new, it has been impressive none-the-less. I have not read any real complaints about the new guns except for the heavy trigger pull, which is actually a plus for me. I have no intention of stealing this thread, but do you have a IWB holster for your Sigma Chris? If so, what do you use? Thanks

No, the Sigma for me is strictly a belt carry. What bad rap do you speak of? Is it the law suit filed by Glock? Glock said the design was too much like their own…but truth be told for me anyways is that I prefer the Sigma grips to the Glock hands down! I also prefer the heavier trigger pull. This is not a nail driving gun…although I shoot VERY straight with it! It is a double action semi with no additional safety feature like the 1911’s. So a little extra on the trigger pull is fine by me.

Thanks for the reply Chris! I am still bound and determined to make it my carry weapon by IWB, I will let you know what I figure out. I am leaning towards the Crossbreed holsters. The issues I have read and heard are just that, I have never witnessed an issue first hand. There were reports of extractor issues causing FTL and FTE, again, just hearsay and most will admit the newer styles have no such issues.

Okay, sorry, but back on topic. I will admit that the free time spent on my ‘work’ trips is spent in gun shops and outdoor shops. After handling many and reading reviews, my next 9mm will be a Walther PPS. For conceal and carry, I will argue it is hard to beat. Very well balanced, enough barrel to be accurate, and cycles very nice. I am personally looking at a wheel gun, but after that purchase, it will be a Walther PPS 9MM.

If I was to get back into a wheel gun it would be the Ruger LCR. This is one sweet gun with a great feel to it.

I am looking at either a LCR or SP101. I know the 2″ barrel version is much better for carry, but I am considering a .357 caliber or even using .38 +P so I am leaning towards the 3″ SP101, not sure on the caliber yet.
