Any of you guys got a .17?? If so, how do you like it? I got to shoot a bunch of snow shoe rabbits last weekend in SD. What a fun little caliber to shoot. I’ve been looking for one all morning. Leaning towards the Ruger 77/17 for a couple reasons. I like the 9 round clip with the ability to upgrade to a 25. I’d also like to get a heavy barrel for it. Gonna have to stop at Cabelas this weekend to do some snooping…

I LIKE AND OWN THE SAVAGE 93 WITH ACCUTRIGGER. THE SWEET TRIGGERPULL MAKES ALL RIFLES SHOOT WELL. MOST FACTORY PULLS ARE WAY TOO STIFF FOR ACCURATE SHOOTING!I TOOK MINE TO NORTH DAKOTA LAST SUMMER AND HAD A BALL SHOOTING FLICKERTAIL GOPHERS. HAD NO PROBLEM HITTING THEM OUT TO 160 YARDS. THEY ARE EXTREMELY FLAT SHOOTERS. A GODD SCOPE IS A MUST!

While I don’t yet own one I can promise you won’t be let down by the Ruger 77/17. I have three Ruger 77’s and absolutely LOVE them! I do plan on getting a .17 caliber but have not decided on what brand or style. I’d like the Ruger, obviously, but hell I have a few now, lol.

Another fun caliber would be the .204 Ruger. More spendy to shoot but probably a little more range and power as well. Personally I plan to get the .204 in a Ruger No. 1 and the .17 in something with more capacity.

    Have fun!

If you are talking about the .17 HMR it is a very good caliber. Lots of fun and cheap to shoot.

the .17 Fireball is a fun round too… very accurate. I shot a ‘possum with it yesterday at 120 yds and he played dead… actually, he was dead

I have had a .17HMR since they came back out a few years ago. Just a bit of useless info, they tried to introduce the round in 1979 and it did not take. Anyways, I have a Savage 93R and love it. No reason to get a heavy barrel in this caliber, the sporter barrels are plenty stiff. You just have to understand the capabilities of this little pea, if you do and abide by them you will have great fun. The round is in my opinion the perfect combination of rate of twist, velocity, caliber, and bullet weight. Superbly accurate! I have shot pigeons at 150 yards seemingly w/o effort. This was off a steady rest of course. Ground squirrels at over 100 yards, and most were head shots. I have a 3-8 power scope on it. I would recommed getting at least a 3-9 power if you want to reach out and touch stuff. I can say this, the .22mag does kill coon better than the .17HMR, but the .17HMR did suffice. This caliber is also not all that friendly to squirrels. I once shot one head on, the round blew one front leg clean off and absolutely mangled the other. I shoot 17gr. V-Max. Perhaps the 20gr bullets might be a bit more meat friendly, but then you are giving up some flat trajectory. I would not shoot a coyote with this round.

Kooty, look at the Marlin. I have the bull barrel and it was less than $200. Holst can vouch for the “Fun Factor” and the accuracy. I upgraded the scope this year and it has been spectacular! I recommend the Federal Balistic Tips.
