For the guys that have switched to from 777 to Jim Shockey’s Gold how many shots will you take at the range before cleaning & has it been more than when you used 777. Has clean up been easier for you? Have you noticed any difference in performance?

Jim Shockey’s Gold

Steve, my buddy and I made the switch and switched back to 777. We saw no advantage to the GOLD, except it being more expensive. Sorry if thats bad news…
November 24, 2008 at 2:13 pm #43945Never used the 777, but I do use the Gold. I normally could shoot 5 times without cleaning, but it was really hard to load on the 4th or 5th shot. I seemed to lose some accuracy on the 4th or 5th as well.
November 24, 2008 at 6:27 pm #43988I purchased some of Shockey’s sticks earlier this year after shooting 777 for a few years. I don’t understand the odd shape of the sticks compared to 777 cylinder shape which seems to make more sense to me. Now after reading different forums about muzzloading I’ve decided to not switch to the gold. I’ve even read where some shooters experienced smoldering stick remnants flying half way down range and laying on the ground smoking. I read more cons than pros about Gold to make me stay with 777 which had never given me problem. Glad I didn’t already give away the 777 I had left.

I had the same thing happen to me at the range yesterday more than once that is why I posted this. Is it possible that I did not have the load far enough down the barrel to cause this? I then tried the 777 again and did not have this problem.
November 28, 2008 at 6:57 am #44383I shot 15 245g Powerbelts the other day at 50 yards with 100g of the Shockey sticks without cleaning. I shot 3 different 5 shot groups and lost nothing as far as accuracy. My brother did say that he saw like a streaming FLAME heading down range a couple different times, but we never found anything smoldering on the ground. If it was a charge that didn’t burn completely I figured my shot would have been way off, but none of them were off enough to worry.
At the same time my brother was shooting the 777 and when we went to clean our guns the Shockey was cleaner, and easier to clean up. Not to say that the 777 was hard to clean though.
I haven’t spent enough time with it to give you a great opinion of it Steve. But from what I’ve been hearing, I may go back to the 777 for the simple fact that the only difference I have found so far is that my gun is cleaner when I’m done shooting for the day, and it saves a little field cleaning as well. It may come down to which one I can get the better deal on at the time I’m ready to by if both the Shockey and the 777 keep showing good results.
Besides, cleaning the gun with a couple while you wait for the TC Foaming Bore Cleaner to work it’s magic is what it’s all about.
November 29, 2008 at 3:21 am #44411I bought a bottle of it to, and don’t like it. The stupid irregular shape doesn’t fit in the barrel very well. I’ve also read that the irregular shape leads to irregular powder loads, which makes for inconsistent velocity’s and bad accuracy.

I was at the range again yesterday and had the same thing happen to me with the gold when I would switch to the 777 it did not have the flame like the Gold did. I still have not figured out if this is a good or bad thing yet.
December 2, 2008 at 3:40 am #44569Spent a long Sunday afternoon at the range and will be going back to 777. Tried everything and couldn’t get groups like I’m used to. Switched back to the 777 and Powerbelts and the groups came back as well!! Now I have to go drop some more $$ on Powerbelts. Must have shot 25-30 times on Sunday!

My guess? Grass fires are bad.
