I was out sighting in my shotgun for this weekend. I shoot an 870 hastings paradox rifled barrel. I was shooting Breneke black magic 2 3/4 12 gauge slugs. I had a 3 to 4 in. group at 50 yds. Now i can’t hit the target at 75 yds. I probably hit 3 out of 30 at 75 yards.I was using a gun rest also. Does anybody have any insight for me. I shot about 25 shots went home cleaned it with bore cleaner went and bought breneke k.o sabots and they shot the exact same. Nice at 50 and nowhere at 75 yds. I went out and bought some hornaday sst today but i don’t want to waste those either. let me know what you think.

do you have any shoulder left after 30+ shots? i don’t feel them when i am putting the hurt on a big guy, but on the range i shoot 3 times and call it good because my shoulder and wallet start hurting. however, of the last 10 bucks i have shot, the farthest was 30 yards so accuracy isn’t a must.

I would double check to make sure your bases and rings are all snug. My bases on my rifle were loose last year and I couldn’t figure out why I was all over the place. Another thing I would make sure that you are not using rifled slugs with a rifled barrel, it will ruin your rifling.

Are you using open sights ? If you are, get a 4’X4′ target, and see where you are grouping. I would guess you are 8-10″ high or low. Open sights, can play tricks on your mind. Because you are shooting 75 yards, your brain is “compensating” for you without you even knowing. When I was in basic, this would happen to alot of guys when shooting 200-300 yards with open sights. One other ritual that I do religiously is BRAS… breathe, relax, aim & squeeze I do this when shooting guns and my bow Good luck… slugs ain’t cheap and like stated….can beat a guys shoulder

I really thinking your sights a coming loose, I always take mine off and use blue Loctite on them all, including scope mounts and bases. Good Luck.

I am using rifled slugs and sabots. There is a scope on there. I just had it tapped to the receiver, because it was on the barrel and you can’t buy a scope with a foot and a half eye relief any more. The scope and rings are tight.

Is it a new gun? I once bought a new 270 and tried sighting it in and had the same thing as you. Brought it back into were i bought it and they bore sighted it and then shot it and same thing. It turned out to be the rifling was screwed up from the factory. Might want to get that checked out too.

I would not use rifled slugs. They make rifled slugs for smooth bore barrels. You stated that you were using a rifled barrel. I would stick to sabot slugs. I have used Federals Barnes Expanders with great results. Good luck this weekend.

Also, A tapped reciever is not the best way to go about it because the nut holding your barrel on can loosen after a few shoots thus. I also have a 870 with a tapped reciever for a back up gun and I clamped a vise-grip on the nut and put the reciever in a vise w/a couple of wood blocks and snugged it up TIGHT. Yeah it galled up the nut a bit but it’s yet to come loose after that. U could also put some medium strength lock tight on the nut. Hope this is the prob as it’s an easy fix.

you cant used rifled slugs in a rifled barrel and Im not sure brenneke makes a sabot. get some federal, winchester, remington or lightfield sabots make sure everything is tight on your gun and start over. maby I missed it but how was you group at 50 yards? if you were shooting the right ammo it should have been less than 3inches and more like 2inches.

I just checked the box and it says for rifled and smooth barrels. The K.O sabot is made by brenneke. So I don’t know I’ll try these hornadays and see if anything changes. Thanks for the insight.

I run a cleaning brush through my rifeled barrell every 3 shot to clean out the rifeling , otherwise each shot will be differrent with every shot.

Jorgy, if this is what you shot through that Hastings Barrel, there is a really good chance that you ruined the rifling in it. That is a shame if that is what happened. Those barrels are made to shoot sabots only, and even copper solid slugs are discouraged for use. If you shot that many rounds through it, it may be hatched.

I shoot that same set-up, and at 50 yards, using Federal Barnes Expanders All 5 of my rounds will touch each other. At 100 I can cover them with my fist. Sounds like you have some problems there. I would bring it to a gunsmith, and have him check it out. He can check the land and grooves and see if you swelled the barrel.
