If looking for a revolver, you can’t go wrong with a Ruger GP-100 in .357mag with a 4 inch barrel if your looking to carry daily or 6 inch if looking to carry mainly for deer hunting.
For semi-auto, a Glock, XD, or M&P in either .40 or .45 will work for CCW and deer hunting. Just remember that the barrel must be a minimum of 4 inches to be legal to hunt with. I want to get a M&P40 sometime to use at the range and to carry deer hunting. I like the idea of having 15+1 rounds of .40 plus having the interchangeable backstraps on the gun.
Find a place where you can handle and maybe shoot any and all of the guns you are considering and really decide what the primary purpose of the gun will be. If its mainly for self defense and CCW, I would look at an auto. If its mainly for hunting, I would look at a wheel gun. If you plan on using it on the range mainly, get whichever you like to shoot more.
You might be able to save some green by purchasing the gun online at a place like Buds Gun Shop or Gun Broker. Need to find an FFL to do the transfer, but still may be cheaper than going to a dealer.
