Quote:
Guy using 100 pounds of tannerite to blow up dump truck faces chargesJan 17 2008 RED WING, Minn.A 30-year-old man from Welch Township has been charged with 3 felonies after a huge explosion on his property prompted authorities to put the Prairie Island nuclear plant a mile away on alert.Prosecutors claim Childs bought 100 pounds of the explosive Tannerite off the Internet. The explosive was loaded into the rear end of a dump truck on Sunday and detonated by a .50-caliber rifle round.Childs told investigators the explosion sent debris up to a quarter-mile away.Goodhue County prosecutors on Wednesday charged Brian Wesley Childs with gross disregard for human life and several lesser charges. All told, he was charged with three felonies and five lesser counts.Childs was released from jail without bail on Wednesday. His attorney, Joseph M. Paiement of Lakeland, said on Thursday that he anticipated filing motions to dismiss the charges ahead of Childs’ next hearing on Feb. 22.”We intend to challenge, particularly, the felony charges,” he said. “I think that was over-charged.”Paiement noted that no one was hurt in the incident, there was no allegation that Childs acted maliciously and no property was damaged _ except for the dump truck.Paiement said he suspected prosecutors filed such serious charges because the explosion happened so close to the nuclear plant. “That clearly is behind a lot of this,” he said.

Anyone know how this turned out for Mr. Childs?

I did a case and calendar search of the MN legal system and couldn’t find…boom. Sorry for the pun.

In my opinion, he did nothing wrong except for maybe letting someone know…but then I don’t think I would have thought there would be a problem either.

If he bought everything leagally its up to him if he wants to destroy his truck or not. In some states you have to have a permit to explode charges of certain sizes, in some states not. I can’t see anything wrong with buying 50 pounds of black powder and setting it off all at once if theres no laws against it. I know the ATF has domain for certain laws, maybe this is one, maybe not, BUT IT SURE WOULD BE FUN!!

This is some great stuff for entertainment and or other things, I know what a 3 pounder can do let alone all the fun with the half’s and pounders. But I can imagine all the attention a 100 lb barrel would create, that’s almost asking for trouble.

If anyone has shot off one pound…there are very very few that would consider 100 let alone near a nuke plant.

Sure woke up the Federal Government!

One of my customers was working for a state agency when this happened. He said in his 25 year career, he’s never seen so many phone calls from Washington as he did that day.

This is funny to me cause I know everyone that was there that day. Childs took the heat for it all, but wasn’t the one that pulled the trigger. As fare as I know charges where reduced and some dropped. I wasn’t there to witness it but heard about it for a long time.
