When hunting in the snow and rain do you put a piece of electrical tape over the end of the barrel? I have heard of this and noticed some of the people on various outdoor programs doing this. Does this work or does it trap any moisture in the barrel? Also does it affect the bullet flight?

I have never done it, but do not think it will affect the bullet at all.

Thanks for posting the ? MN. I was wondering the same thing after I had to keep cleaning out my barrel with the ramrod on Sat. I’m amazed how much snow got in my barrel even with it pointed down.

When my buddy fired his musket after the hunt Sat. night it didnt sound right at all?? We figured it had something to do with the snow or moisture. I think I will consider covering the barrel in the future.

When I was an guide apprentice on the North Slope we always used black tape. I would make a little tab to pull off before shooting. I would strongly advise not shooting through the tape. There is enough pressure in that barrel any little blockage may erase some of your face.

I have been using finger cots for years to cover the barrel of my rifle and muzzleloader. Basically they look like a tiny condom ( ) and they fit perfectly over the end of the barrel. I got a box of em from a lady that works at the post office…they use em so they can shuffle through all the letters faster without getting cuts. They have never affected the performance of the bullet hitting the intended target. My bet is the pressure blows the cot off before the bullet even gets to the end of the barrel! Try em, they work awesome!

Good I idea Slip! I have seen others use tape or even an extra glove, but they removed it before a shot.

You are absolutely right NEVER AND I MEAN NEVER shoot when the barrel is blocked with anything. You do not have to take my word for it ask your local gun smith.
