3″ mags! Buy him a couple boxes should be good to go. Have him shoot it at a paper plate fifty yards out. If he can get a good group going. He will be good!

October 12, 2007 at 3:14 pm #30102I would shoot the 2 3/4 slugs this year. You do not really lose too much with these. If you hit your target it should go down either way.
Good Luck

October 12, 2007 at 3:40 pm #30106i’ve been hunting with a 20g 870 for over 20 years and i’ve found the 2 3/4 shells to be more accuret, you really don’t gain anything with the 3″, also i’ve found that differant brands shoot differant buy 3 or 4 differant brands and see which shoots best (remingtons for me) but all guns are differant.

it’s all about shot placementOctober 12, 2007 at 4:08 pm #30109Go with the Lightfield’s(2 3/4)–they seem to do well in my 870. Flat to 100 yards and pretty good even out at 150. I also hear the Hornady makes a slug that shoots flat out at 150?? I havent looked into those as of yet.

October 13, 2007 at 1:41 am #30154I would use 2 3/4. Field test the different brands and see which one his particular gun likes. Shotguns can be a bit temperamental as to which slugs they shoot well with.
The brands listed in the previous posts are all good ones. I would also try out Barnes Expanders.

I could not agree more even identical guns will shoot the same slug differently you need to try different brands to find the best slug for your gun, no one can tell you which brand is best for your gun you have to find that out on your own

October 26, 2007 at 1:04 am #18302I used the same thing not too long ago and I figured the biggest shells possible is the best and Winchester shot the most accurate out of my gun
