I’m looking to buy a .243 for my Nephews to use. The 1st one that just turned 12 this week and 2 others are turning 12 in the next 2 years. I would like them to be able to use it for deer hunting. However, I would also like to use it for coyotes myself. Does anyone know of a .243 that could serve this purpuse? i’ve never rifle hunting for deer before, only 12 gauge, and the only rifle i own is a .17 HMR. Thanks for any advice in advance.

I would definitely encourage you to get a Savage .243 for your nephew. They have very little kick, reliable, mid-range in price, and plenty of gun for deer as well as coyotes. You can buy a Savage package (rifle, scope, hard case, scope is bore sighted, and the Accu-Trigger System) for around the mid $400 range. It is possible to get it cheaper if you shop around I owned one and was very happy with its performance.

Anything single shot, teach them one shot, one kill. This leason will serve them well in life. Do something right the first time! Now, I understand that sometimes things do not turn out perfect, but learning to blood track a deer will teach leasons also.

I’am with AMWATSON on this one. I have a .270 Savage that I have been hunting with for 4 years and it’s been a great gun. Try Fleet-Farm, thay have had bolts actions or semi-automatics in that caliber.

    Good luck hunting.
