I use a 300 Win Mag with 180 grain Hornady Heavy Mags, drops them like a rock. All our group uses 300’s of some sort, 300 H&H , 300 WM and 300 RUM. All have taken elk.

December 2, 2006 at 2:34 am #26406Thanks for some idea I was asked today to join a hunt in Montana on a private ranch and I wanted to go but alot of my guns are revolving around Minnesota hunting so before I went out to look at buying a new gun I wanted some type of idea what caliber should I start looking at and go from there.

December 2, 2006 at 2:41 am #26409Alright if we are going that route, I would recommend anything CX … just go heavy….. Getting an elk with any weapon is an awesome feat. But I sure would love to get one with a bow. Has anybody seen the video of the guy shooting one at point blank with a bow? You could hear it breathing on the video…

December 2, 2006 at 2:50 am #26412Anything from .270 on up will be sufficient for elk. The most common are the .06, 7mm, and .300 The .270 is the lightest I would go

December 2, 2006 at 3:04 am #26419Yeah, I probably wouldn’t go with a normal 270 load either..but I will put my 270 WSM up against any other load for speed, trajectory, and stopping power..
I don’t think there is a game animal I wouldn’t hunt with this round…

.270, 30-06, .300, 7mm
I may have messed up on the 7mm though. The 06 and .300 are both .30 caliber rounds…mainly just a different casing and powder charge…

Thanks for catching that…I looked to check and didn’t get back right away… I for some odd reason was thinking a 7mm was a .380…and that didn’t seem right…oh well ya caught it anyway…thanks
