    TESTIMONIAL -Tannerite Binary Explosive Targets

By Paul L. Marshall – Chemical Engineer

I am by degree a Chemical Engineer. I have worked with explosives for almost thirty years (Including my military experience). Recently I purchased a case of Tannerite exploding targets (My expectations were certainly not high). My initial test proved me wrong. This is one of the most fantastic explosive mixture I have ever seen or tested. The chemistry of this binary is very unique. To my knowledge there are none quite like it. I have worked with hundreds of High Explosive compounds and mixtures. None of which possess such remarkable properties. For instance:

Brisance is a term, which is used to describe the shock and shattering power of an explosive. This characteristic is a direct reflection of detonation velocity. The faster an explosive detonates, the greater the brisance. For example an exploding gas tank (not the Hollywood variety) is very slow. The results: The tank will usually split along the weld seams, into two or three large sections. Although a tremendous amount of energy is released, it is released over a period of several hundred milliseconds. (1 millisecond =1/1000th of a second ) A High explosive detonation, equal to the energy of the exploding gas tank will be released in 30 – 40 microseconds. (1 microsecond = 1/1000000 of a second). The results: the same tank will be blown into hundreds small pieces, which will be propelled at supersonic velocity. This is referred to as primary fragmentation (Not Schrapnel). The higher the detonation velocity the smaller the fragments will be.

When Tannerite targets detonate they produce very small fragments. The bottles are made from a pliable polyurethane type plastic, which will stretch. The fragments from Tannerite targets show no sign of stretching they are shattered. Think of it like pull taffy. When it is pulled slowly it stretches. When it is slammed against something hard it shatters. I would estimate the velocity of detonation to be between 5,000 and 7,000 meters per second (about 3.4 miles per second) depending on a variety of conditions including but not limited to the thoroughness in which the target is mixed and the amount of hydrostatic shock as well as foot pounds of energy tranfered by a high powered rifle. This means entire reaction is complete in about 20 millionths of a second. The bullet traveling 3,000 feet per second only moves .700 before the detonation is complete. This is incredible for a loosely, packed explosive mixture.

The sensitivity of this binary is quite remarkable. Most explosive mixtures sensitive enough to be initiated by the strike of a bullet are too sensitive to handle and usually do not detonate completely. The Tannerite targets require High impulse energy in order to detonate and detonation is always complete. Impulse energy is expressed as ft/lbs per microsecond. (Energy delivered to the target based upon the time required to penetrate it). The minimum impulse energy required to initiate detonation of these binary targets is approximately (4.5. – 5.0 ft/lbs per u/sec). A .357 magnum produces impulse energy of approximately (1.3 ft/lbs per u/sec). These numbers relate only to the penetration of this specific target. This means that accidental detonation from dropping or crushing is very unlikely.

I did a small impact test ? Hammer drop test ?. This was done with a 5-pound & 15-pound hammer. A drop of twenty-four inches against a hard surface failed to cause a detonation. I was not able to detonate it with any hammer or drop test. Friction also failed to cause fire or detonation.

These targets are great fun. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

When using these targets, follow the manufactures directions, never try to use them for anything except targets. When they are suspended above ground (swinging from a string they become the ultimate challenge).

Have fun and be safe !

I think Bills sells some type of exploding targets…might not be this big though.

Sounds like more fun than dynamite although thats fun too. I once worked for a drilling company that put in pipelines underground though limestone and they had to dynamite it when they had too. We once drove a D-7 dozer over a 50 pound box that fell out of the bucket and it didn’t explode, they make it this way for safety. It takes a solid impact to set it off like this target does. Dynamite is fun and this stuff has to be the ultimate. Just seen the film, how big is a piece of this target, i didn’t see anything so its got to be small. Nickle or dime size?

Come on now. Who wants to replace their target after every shot?

Missed your question Mossy…near as I can tell the target is about 5 inches…I’ve never used one so I don’t know for sure.

Bill’s does have exploding targets but nothing like these…and they don’t allow them to be used in their indoor ranges..for obvious reasons.

I bought some of the half pound Tannerite and some small exploding targets called Scarecrow Jr’s. Here’s a video from this weekend setting them off with a .22. The big Tannerite targets require a high power rifle round like a 30-06 or .223.

    Very cool!

sorry guys as fun as these targets are, we do sell some exploding targets, however can not allow them to be shot here as they contribute to a fire hazard.
