I have a navy issue s&w 38 special I inherited, it is original with the lanyard holder.
My question is, Would it be worth anything or would it be more practical to modify it with new grips?

    Riverdancer,

I’m not sure which model Smith that would be…but, I can tell you that it’s much less expensive to buy grips for the gun you have than to sell and purchase new. I hope I understood your question correctly.

I paid just under $200. for my Model 19 and a similar Smith is around $600. now. If it has any personal value. Keep it, fix it and use it.

    IMO….

The guys at Bill’s will give you an idea to what it’s worth if your interested in that route.

My FIRST handgun was a Model 10 with a 6″ barrel…had my mother sign for it!

Here’s some currant info on it.

    S&W’s website~Model 10

The 10’s are an outstanding plain jane, reliable workhorse.

What do you want out of a hand gun? Concealed Carry? Target shooting? Plinking? Home protection? The other question is…How much do you shoot?

Brian, Right now I will use it for target practice but I want to take the conceal and carry class so I would probably want something smaller?

    First off…opinions vary!

IMO, I would keep it because there’s a million (actually millionS) out there that would effect the price. But that’s a personal choice. It’s a very nice plinking handgun that’s yours already. In the .38 cal, ammo is cheap.

For CC, opinions REALLY vary! My best recommendation is to find the smallest handgun that you can shoot accuratly..and that’s going to be differant for everyone. Weight of the handgun is another major factor. I’m a believer in the smaller the better for CC (as long as the shooter can manage the gun) There will be many guns at Bill’s, if you see something there that looks good to you ask to shoot it…it’s a great way to figure out what’s right for you.

If you want to do a little research, here’s some of the handguns that will be there that I know of:

    Kahr PM 40 subcompact

    Kel Tec P11 9mm

Kel Tec P3 AT .380 (take a good look at this one)

    Glock 26 9mm subcompact

    Maybe others will chime in.

One otherthing (not to start a debate) don’t be so worried about the cal. of the handgun at this time. Focus on what’s comfortable and you can handle (size wise).

ALL the above is in my humble opinion and is subject to what’ important to you…what’s important to me…just don’t count!

    Don’t forget the simple revolver.
A small .38 special +P snubby in DAO is a great carry gun. Very safe as well. Small, powerfull and reliable.

Yup, there’ll be at least one pretty little shiny snubby there too! They are actually lighter weight than most subcompact autos.
