Green energy isn’t green. It just makes a lot of green for a few certain people.

The deal requires Talon begin shipping the concentrate before Jan. 1, 2026.
However, Talon has yet to begin the permitting process. Talon said it intends on beginning that process, which could take years, in 2022, the News Tribune reported in November.
The process took 14 years for PolyMet, which has proposed a large, open-pit, copper-nickel mine and processing facility near Hoyt Lakes and Babbitt, to earn its permits in 2018, only to have several of them put on hold because of legal challenges that remain ongoing.

Or at least until a new Tesla “magically” appears in their driveways,,,,

January 11, 2022 at 12:25 pm #2088871This should be interesting to follow. It’s also worth noting that Talon has 51% ownership/stake in the project, not 100% and will work towards earning 60%. Rio Tinto is the global mining corporation involved with Talon. All the money generated won’t be staying in the US due to who is involved, but it stands to juice the MN economy temporarily with jobs while opening the door for further expansion/exploration for Nickel deposits. This isn’t a home-grown company growing exponentially, rather global corporations essentially paying to use MN resources. Either way there are economic gains to be had.
From what I can find, Tesla currently gets most of its nickel from Brazil and other overseas sources. If the US is going to truly move forward with all this shift in vehicle production, it’s going to have to find more nickel deposits in the US like this. If not, we are essentially just relying on other countries for a different energy source. It’d be like oil 2.0
With all the environmental permitting process yet to unfold, this could still go a lot of ways. 2026 is not that far away and things will really have to unfold quickly for this to happen. From a complete outsider’s perspective, it seems that Tesla getting involved gives this a significantly higher probability of happening. Musk has made a fortune accelerating his ventures forward and not worrying one bit about being the “first” to do something, rather profiting from it.

dirtywaterPosts: 1627January 11, 2022 at 1:08 pm #2088887To be clear, when troutbum says “sayonara watershed” — The Kennecott/Talon mineral leases are located on a major watershed divide at the headwaters of the Kettle River, which flows to the St. Croix River, and the Tamarack River, which flows to the Mississippi River via Big Sandy Lake. Adverse impacts of sulfide mine discharge on mercury contamination of fish could affect downstream land owners and communities on the Kettle, St. Croix, Tamarack, and Mississippi Rivers.

Yep and Elon Musk needs more green. He seems to be a little short on it these days

I think it will take a little more than that. Maybe a new Tesla in every one of their family members driveway. Or a few Million $ showing up in one of their offshore account

With Elon Musk involved with this one my guess it will be fast tracked. There are lots of politicians who owe him. He’s a big contributor to lots of politicians

Exactly! Can’t have your cake and eat it to!

Will they be mining in sulfur-rich rock like that of the Duluth Complex (Ely area)?
