Terrova Issues

I’ve got an 80#, 24 volt Terrova that’s 3 years old. I’ve had 2 issues lately that maybe you guys have experienced.

    1) The hand controller will get a message that says “motor error.” Sometimes this will happen while the motor is running and it will shut itself down. I can then hook up the foot pedal but the pedal doesn’t have spot lock. Other times, When you drop the motor down, it will immediately get the error and won’t connect to the controller. Sometimes reseating the motor will reset it, other times it won’t. This error is random and intermittent.

    2) Yesterday the motor would completely lose power. It was all most like it had a bad connection to the batteries but then it would reconnect and start to work again. There was no power to the motor when this happened. Couldn’t check the battery lights, use the foot pedal, etc.

The trolling motor is networked to a helix 9 but I’m not sure that matters. The bird never seems to have issues connecting.

Anyone experience this? Really tough to fish in heavy current with a trolling motor that works intermittently.

Seems very similar to the issue I had with mine. Mine ended up with water in the motor and had to be replaced. I can’t say for sure but it sounds similar.

FYI.. the water got in from a manufacturer defect in the motor housing. It had a notch in the seal gland where there shouldn’t have been one.

Mnfishhunt….thanks. Surprised the circuit breaker would go bad after 3 years but I’ll replace it.

@biggill did you get the same error on the controller? I’ll probably call minnkota tomorrow and see what they say.

No. Mine was an older terrova but the intermittent power seems very similar.

Thanks. I’ve been doing some research and the motor error is only supposed to happen after a software update. Once you cycle the power it is supposed to go away. I have never updated software….I feel like that can cause more problems but maybe it needs an update.

My 2017 Terrova has had some weird issues too. We used it for 2 days in ND from fully charged to fully discharged, everything worked fine.Tried it on the Mississippi River a couple weeks later and couldn’t get remote to connect. Kept losing bluetooth connection. I only post this to say the tech at Scheel’s says everything tests okay on their batteries. They suggested it could be a voltage issue as the terrova’s are sensitive to voltage changes or something. My battery system has on e new and one od battery so that is what I need to check next. A friend said that fixed his issues.

Your batteries need to be equal in age and capacity in a 24 volt system . Using a new battery with an old one will not work properly. They have different charge and discharge rates. Many explanations on the internet of why you should not do it.
