Terrova I Pilot issue.

I have noticed some issues with my new to me terrova I pilot. Sometimes it does not respond to the commands from the remote. I can try to turn left and it will not respond. Sometimes I will go to make a slight turn and it will turn 90 degrees and other times it will make a very small choppy turn. When changing speed level it will sometimes require me to push the button several times.

The remote is on its 2nd season and is the new style remote. The I pilot/terrova is old and came with the boat. Anybody experience an issue like this before?

So yeah in certain weather conditions the spot lock on my 36v 101lb Terrova pilot link is not super precise. I suspect there is a fine line between battery consumption and programming these things to keep you tight to a spot. However, when winds are manageable (10-15mph) it happens to do a very nice job of keep ing me close to the area I am fishing, it meets my expectations.

Expectations are the key, if you think any spot lock system will keep you close enough to a spot to drop shot or vertical jig specific fish you may have set the expectation bar too high. in reading this thread the one thing I can agree on is that from time to time, usually upon setting the spot lock for the first time the motor jumps to high power to correct itself. I find my motor rarely reverts back to using high power after that initial set. The high power surge is dangerous but I ready myself for it.

As for ALL the other features this motor offers from speed control to follow the contour to auto pilot to compass the motor is fantastic. It allows me to focus on reading patterns, determining presentation tweets, rigging, teaching and equipping my fishing partners. It flat out makes me a better fisherman. For that, I can overlook the effectiveness of one feature in more extreme winds / current.

I think you responded to the wrong thread.

I do have 2 thoughts, of which one I am sure you have thought of….Battery? Second have you tried to re-pair the remote to the motor?

The i-Pilot Link remote is prelearned to the controller from the factory. The top of
the controller has a single learn button to allow additional remotes to be added
to the system. To learn additional remotes:
    1. Power up the trolling motor.
    2. Push and hold the learn button down. A steady audio tone will
be heard while holding this button.
    3. While holding the learn button on the controller, from the remote home screen select:
Settings > Learn and press the OK key
    4. If the learn process was successful, the controller will respond with four beeps. In
addition, the Dashboard section of the remote will begin to display motor status
    information such as prop speed.
A remote can only be learned to one controller at a time. A controller can have up to
4 remotes learned to it and actively communicating with it.

This one is for the regular iPilot

I would still replace the battery. Never know if the remote stayed of due to sitting on a button or something.

So I have replaced the battery, checked the connections, and re learned the remote and the issue is still there. Next step will be to get a volt meter and make sure it’s not a power issue.

I read somehwere on like page 4 of a google search of a guy who had similar problems and had to replace the control board in the base of the terrova. Hopefully that is not the issue.

What battery are you using. If your using the energizing battery you will have problem. I had the same problem. Only radio shack has the right battery. Let me know if you got more questions.

The owners manual calls for one CR2450 battery. Brand of battery is immaterial.

Pretty sure it’s a Rayovac battery.

I should mention I did not have issues with this remote on my powerdrive v2 I pilot

It does matter. You can call up Minnkota. There are batteries with CR2450 and CR2450N. There will be certain brands that will not be compatible with your i pilot or will have very little battery life. There were articles on this back in 2013 because people were having problems. I actually was one of them and if you compare a CR2450 and a CR2450N you will see one is slightly different. I don’t know why this would be an issue because they are both CR2450 but I am just telling you what was believe to be the problem. you can google more about this battery thing and you’ll see what Im talking about. Good luck

I’ll agree that a CR2450N is not the same as a CR2450, hence the different number designation assigned to each one. Every manufacturer’s goal is to have 100% customer satisfaction. MinnKota does NOT specify any particular brand battery. They do call for a CR2450 battery and I would not expect to be able to substitute with anything else. If MinnKota wants to specify Radio Shack batteries, they have failed to include that in the current owners manual.
