Tents

Here’s the situation….I’d like to fish the Brule. I’d like to fish it hard, an all day marathon type fishing. If I drive up and drive back on the same day, that’s 6+ hours in the truck. That either cuts into the fishing time or makes it dangerous getting home. So I’m thinking maybe I should take advantage of the local campsites and do an over-nighter instead.

I have a Dodge Ram 1500 with the Ramboxes and a Tonneau cover. That pretty much eliminates the “truck tent” idea. How about a tent that would sit in the back of the truck? I’d be up and off the ground on a decent level surface. Something like a pup tent with an air mattress inside sitting on a sheet of plywood in the back of the truck. Instead of stakes into the ground, I could pin the tent down to the plywood with screws or something.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks guys!

I think your plan would work, but when I see the pickup box tents I’ve often wondered why. What’s wrong with the ground? Personally, it seems like it would be a pain to have to take out everything that you have in the box to put a tent in there.

Consider any money you would spend towards this overnight venture then consider a cheap motel. There is one in Brule and Iron River. I’ve stayed at both and they are nice peaceful towns to stay.
Camping is fun too, unless it rains.

I’ve done both. The hotel in Brule is a great option plus the Kro Bar is next door. The hotel allows you to throw the waders on the boot dryer or spread things out if you do encounter rain. I’ve also done the simple tent thing at Copper Campground. That puts you close to a lot of fly friendly water. One thing about camping is it presents a different feel to the trip. I camped for a few days so I didn’t consider a set up in the truck.

Both options can have their rewards.

The entertainment factor of interacting with the locals at the Kro Bar makes this the only way to go. The Kro Bar along with a few of the locals that hold up the bar, should be collectively listed as a national treasure.

At my age, the next time I lay on the ground they will be throwing dirt on me.

I vote for a motel. Donate a couple of pints of blood if need be to offset the cost. lol

Steve, I keep an older Texson pop-up truck camper for just that reason. It’s not a space hog to store and will fit a shortbox truck with the tailgate down. It doesn’t have a lot of amenities other than a fridge, stove and sink. It’s not heavy or nasty to tie down. I found mine on Craigslist from a private party. Just my .02- – -jerr
