Tennis (fishermans) elbow

So if you have persistent pain in your elbow when you cast (musky guys probably get this a lot) you like me probably have this. I got a shot and bought a strap from my Target pharmacy and it has helped a lot, I opted to wait to try PT, I want to see if the shot alone will take care of this.
My question is why couldn’t my regular doctor give me the shot? He knew exactly what it was, but he has to send me to another clinic, more time, travel, another co-pay and my insurance has to pay even more, they did nothing special at this clinic to diagnose & it was not even a doctor who gave me the shot-one more reason health care is so expensive. Anyway I would reccomend this simple shot if your having elbow pain it has helped me, keep casting, don’t turn into a walleye guy because of elbow pain lol

Cortisone shot? I’d guess it’s probably something that doc doesn’t do at that clinic. Pending the location, some will use X-ray for accuracy. Better off going to someone or somewhere that might do this more often then your primary.

I would get tennis elbow from time to time while casting for bass on the weekend. A hot pad treatment would take the pain away and no shots were needed.

You don’t want your family practice guy jabbing a needle full or cortisone and hitting the wrong spot or a nerve. There is a reason orthopedic docs specialize in that stuff.

I get them in neck, back, and shoulder ( you whoosy mucky guy in just your elbow jester jester jester jester jester ) as my orthopedic doc says
“ have to be a dam good sniper and hit the mark perfectly “. Little different for me because a mistake means paralysis

Jab away doc! It was a PA who gave me the shot anyway, nice gal. My wife has a friend whose an anesthesiologist I like to tease and say: he’s just a tech right? All you have to do is weigh a guy to know how much gas to give him!

I used to get walleye elbow. Shooting pain in my elbow every time setting the hook. The wrap helped a bit but rubbing out my forearm was the real ticket. Was told this is where the muscle knots up tight then pulls on the tendon that is connected to the elbow. Bust up that knot with your thumb or a muscle roller. Might need to be done a few times.

For tennis elbow (I had it long ago when I bowled) Doc told me to get a no stretch wrap to go around my forearm just below the elbow. Instant relief!

Nothing to do with a shot but jumping through hoops right now with the FW and insurance.
She had an issue and goes to her Primary. Couple more tests and sent to a specialist. Before she can see the specialist the appointment is cancelled. Not covered under her health plan. (Doctor not in network)
Appointment with a different specialist. Another CT Scan. FW needs surgery. This Doctor/Surgeon can’t do it (too complicated for him)
Referred to a another Specialist/Surgeon at UW Health. Nope, not in network. Insurance says go see this Doctor/Specialist/Surgeon (in network) Get appointment meet Doctor. He tells us that he AND 2 of his partners have looked at all the CT scans(3), MRI(2), ultrasound and she needs surgery ASAP. These 3 can’t perform it. It is too complicated. Recommends Same Specialist/Surgeon at UW Health. Have to get it approved by insurance first before you can make appointment at UW Doctor. Takes 6 days to get insurance to approve the referral to UW Doctor. Call for appointment–Soonest appointment IS September 24th!!! We are on a cancellation list hoping for an earlier opening.
We have had 1 GP and 4 Surgeons that say she needs surgery ASAP! 09/24 I’m sure it will just be a consult with probably more tests before they do surgery. This is going on 5 weeks already! WTF!
Don’t know how to fix it but the Healthcare System needs some sort of repair.
I know Doctors and Hospitals brought this on themselves but insurance dictates TOO much in healthcare.

Sorry for the long winded rant. flame

Fill some small dixie cups with water and freeze. When elbowscare sore ice down so it gets a little numb. That will give you some relief. I battled that stuff from working as a carpenter. They always told me you have to rest it. And im like I got this job I need to support my family with. Retied now and elbows feel great.

It’s amazing how bad habits can creep into every segment of life.

Be watchful to form, relax and even out shoulders, don’t white knuckle your rod all day, keep loose, keeping your wrist in line with your arm, and keeping elbows close to the body all help on different levels

Become ambidextrous. Lighten the load on the one arm. It’s really not hard at all to get used to the other hand.

Hope all the arms get better here. Been there done that. I’ve had tears falling tossing ringworms falls past with the pain at times. Completely worth it when u stick a fatty.

I have tennis elbow as well. Its sore all day everyday. Work beats me up.
But I’d 1 doc did it all then how would they make that money. Just like going in for a ear infection. Doc knows and they know the cure but they send you to there buddy the ear specialist. Then they get a piece of the pie as well.

Use to see a lot of tennis and racket ball guys do this and it works. Simple Velcro strap support before it starts to hurt makes a lot of difference.

That’s not really how it works and I hope docs aren’t practicing that way. Besides, no doc/clinic is going to throw away money by sending them somewhere else. Good easy money in a lot of these simple procedures. Thing is, most docs do the opposite, do more than is needed to due billing/liability.

Simple example, say you tore a ligament. You know it, the doc knows it, everyone knows it. But before you get an MRI, you first will be getting an x-ray? Most diagnosis can have a series of billable and not needed procedures. Why? Because insurance pays for it… and that’s my biggest beef with healthcare.

Side note Little medical hack. Most clinics have something similar to MYCHART in which you can ask you provider questions. Say your kid has another ear infection. This can allow you to skip the BS appointment and get you straight to a specialist. Typically works with ongoing issues but some providers will due it up front. If you want to see a dermatologist, ask your primary via MYCHART if they get you a referral without a visit.

I used to play just about every sport with a racquet. Tennis, racquetball, pong, and badminton. I ran into this problem frequently when I was younger. I don’t play them nearly as much anymore as I used to, but I do still get that tingling feeling on rare occasion, especially after I’ve been slinging huge muskie lures for hours on end. It usually just goes away on its own after I give it a few days rest.

I agree – I’m going through some serious health stuff right now. First off, you have to understand you are your own best advocate. Ask questions, be critical of how and why you are being treated, seek other opinions, etc.

I have found that doctors and nurses (I’ve seen dozens in the past couple months) care tremendously about their patients and want the best for them. The issue lies mainly with the insurers and their requirements.

A couple other things – if there are minor issues like an earache or bad cold, etc. go see a minute clinic through CVS, Target, Walgreens, etc. They will treat you and move on.

Second, if the issue is more serious and you get insurance through your employer their benefits broker usually provides a service or a point of contact to ask specific questions about coverage, benefits, out of pocket costs, etc.

In PT I learned the “Tyler Twist” exercise after trying multiple other exercises, dry needling, etc. Lots of co-pays.

A one-time Cortisone shot might work, but over time multiple shots will degrade the ligaments and soft tissues and lead to further problems.

Get the Theraband and learn the Tyler Twist. Start gradually and build. Only thing that worked for me long term to recover and keep from coming back.

    @hnd

wave We are all in the same treatment

This is a tendon – ligament issue. Ya might thing it’s a joint item that you deem cortisone would resolve but 99% I believe it’s not.

That said, I’m not the one experiencing your pain. coffee

Fry-ran out and bought a Theraband; everytime I read your posts it costs me money! Almost looked for it on the Tacklewarehouse site hah
Cheaper than a co-pay though. Thanks

I’ve run into situations where the doc and I know what needs to be done but the insurance company requires additional tests and referrals before authorizing the treatment we both knew was required from Day 1. I really hate medical insurance companies these days. Rules are stupid in many instances, costs are not managed well yet CEOs make north of $100M.

Start slow, the exercise does hurt especially the first week or so… but it stretches the ligament the opposite way that you probably torqued it doing other activities. Make sure you get one of the easier bands (red) and use it for days/weeks/months before you consider going to a more difficult band color (green).
