I was just thinking while in the deer stand. Was wondering if anyone out there has a story of a cell phone costing them a deer while ringing, texting, ECT…. I know I’ve had a couple close calls but have been lucky so far!

Someone in my party last year was in an enclosed stand and was playing a game or something on his phone. Buck walked right past him. Luckily it made it’s way over to @Anotherfisherman and all was well.

I am sure there have been bigger blunders than that though.

I carry the cell phone only to make ma happy….safety thing she says. Its on silent mode and stuffed deep in a pocket and stays there while I am in the woods. Cell phones, smart watches, vaping, smoking for real, boozing of any sort….all poison in the woods.

Not a cell phone, but we use walkies with the ear pieces. One of the guys in the group told us a big buck was coming in. When he did he must’ve pulled the plug for the ear piece. So now all responses go over the speaker. One of the guys says something to the effect of good luck. It goes over the speaker, spooks the deer and he never got a shot on it.

I believe that is illegal. In fact, I think Babe Winkelman got in trouble for doing something similar.

My buddy just had it happen this last weekend in sconnie bowhunting. He was texting his employees what time to come into work on Monday, and he looked up and here is a shooter buck walking right thru his last shooting lane… best part is he had a trail camera Set up facing him and the trail the buck was on, when it triggered the camera you can see my buddy sitting there phone in hand texting away!!????

The way I’m reading this is the guy is simply narrating that a big buck is coming in towards himself. Would it be illegal if he was narrating a big buck was coming towards him? At this point, the electronic communication isn’t aiding anyone in the taking of the animal (in fact was detrimental to the taking of the animal ) )

I don’t spend much time on my cell in the stand, definitely not the first/last hour of the day it stays in pocket. I have an old yathzee game that I will play in the middle time if I need a distraction, but I always make to sure to scan regularly and not just get too caught up with it. I’ve had it since before I got my first cell phone in 2004. Dropped it out of the tree a time or two so some of the housing plastic is gone and I’ve wrapped it in camo duct tape but it still works. It’s not even so much as a distraction anymore as it’s almost a tradition/ superstition to give me good luck. Not always but often enough to keep me doing it, good things have happened when I get a really high score on that thing.

To my knowledge it hasn’t cost me a deer. It’s easy to play with gloves on and is very easy to slide back into a pocket so if I do get surprised by a deer I didn’t expect to show up yet it’s easy to get out of my hands.

Probably also helps that the majority of my stands I get little to no cell reception anyway.

folke, I do not know the answer to that. I also missed that al-wichman’s location is WI, so I don’t know the laws there. I was speaking about MN. This is from the MN regulations, page 28.

Just remembering to turn it off or on vibrate is a good thing to remember. I like to use mine for the time, the weather/sunrise/sunset, and texting friends just to help pass the time.

We do not hunt using walkies. It was also years ago before cell phones became widely used. We hunt a friend’s land which is over 800 acres and people set up camp in different area. The walkies were used to inform where everyone was so nobody got shot in case someone hit a deer and was tracking it they didn’t catch a round. It was a safety thing more then anything.

Trying to kill a deer with a cell phone would be very dangerous to the hunter. Lol
