Taylors falls area reports

  • #1549785

Hello, my dad and I have never fished the Croix and don’t know where to find walleyes in the Taylors Falls area or how to fish the river. Where should we go and what should we use? Thanks, Matt

If you have rod holders tie on a variety of cranks and start covering water. The water was up when I was out so most fish came outside of the channel. Saw a handful of guys jigging deeper holes with bait but did not see them catching much. That was only my second trip fishing eyes up that way.

If the water is up there might be a lot of water coming through Taylors falls right now. That can mean lots of current mixed in with the rocks up there. Might not be a great time to learn that stretch of river.

Lot calmer waters and plenty of places to fish from Franconia south. Like Dustin said trolling cranks can be good. Pitching and soaking bait to current seams can be good also. Look for those seams coming off points, openings to side channels and down river ends of islands. Higher flows can sure push a mixed bag of fish into those current seams.

Another one of my favorites is pitching jigs and plastics into the logs on the outside bends and side channel openings. 1/4 ounce draggin jigs work great for this and getting those jigs back out of the logs.

The water level was a little lower than I expected yesterday. Still found some fish busting the surface behind some logs near the sand bar we had set up on for the afternoon. The Draggin jig and worked well for crawling plastics across the pile of logs to pick up a few bass. My girls caught a few minnows for me to try and ended up hooking into a nice walleye from under those logs to.
