Ok, Here’s the deal. I have volunteered to guide a couple of our military veterans for this event and am greatly honored to give back to those who have served our country to allow us to have the freedom’s so many take for granted.
Anyway, my whole game plan was to target walleye (what else would a walleye student do?). So I heard back from vet guests that they are bringing their own rod/reel setups for SM bass and that is what they want to fish for. Glad I know now, but I have to switch everything up.
I’ll be going out of the NW side and I am aware of good SM spots in general. So are they still found shallow at all, or have they gone deeper? How deep? There is rock I can find, are they over sand? I’ve heard some being found occasionally on the flats, worth trying? Any advice on baits, lures?
I’d really like to give these guys a good opportunity to catch what they’re hoping for!

I would look around rock piles that top out at 8′ or less. You can sight fish those which I think the guys might think is cool. Also it won’t take long to find if they fish are there. Deep flats might take to long to locate fish.

If you find active fish topwater baits are hard to beat for fun. Jig and a twister tail should also work.

You should have no trouble finding some spots, just look for the BASS boats.

This FREE advise is worth what you paid for it. grin

Thank you for taking your time to help these guys out. waytogo

I’d start off early pitching cranks or tube jigs on the top edges of the rocks and start sliding out to the bottom edges as the day goes on… Football jigs with crawfish colored paddletails in 20 FOW win the recent event up there.

Depending how things are going sometimes a good old fashioned slip bobbers and a leech in 12-15′ is sometimes the best smallie approach.

Feel free to PM me tomorrow.

Thanks Jon, I was truly honored to be a part of this. But it was not about me. Most of the veterans I met at this event were dealt far more sh*tty jobs that were put upon them with little or no choice. Most were during the draft era and if did not report, they were considered criminal! Worse yet, many of the the “nam” vets were disgraced and rejected upon their return. For sure a very sad deal in our American history. They too paid a very heavy price and sacrificed much to fulfill their honor for our country.
It was most rewarding to witness their “life goes on” attitude and living life that was spared from their past and to be as giddy as when they were kids themselves and happy to catch a nice bass as they were to still be alive!
