For those you that catch a lot of sturgeon on the St. Croix river, what percentage of the sturgeon have been tagged by the DNR? I got 12 sturgeon in my boat this fall and 3 of them were tagged. It seems like 25% being tagged is a very high percentage but I know my “sample size” is too small to be statistically significant so I wonder what others are seeing.

Does anybody know how many sturgeon the DNR has tagged since they began the tagging study several years ago? Are they still actively tagging sturgeon?

    Thanks,

    Boone

Hmmm. I could tally my season #’s up, but probably looking at close to 200+ sturgeon and only 1 tagged.

I caught 16 sturgeon on the Rainy this spring, and 1 tagged.

So, i’d say your sample size is a wittle small.

I have those numbers on my home computer although they are a few years old now.

It was something like…nah, not going to guess. I’ll see if I can round up Joel.

Sheesh, I didn’t believe 200 the moment AFTER I typed it, couldn’t stop thinking about it so I just tallied it up to 80 on the Croix and 16 on the rainy.

Fisherman always lie. 1 reason I enjoy keeping a log book, easier to go back and count.

Haha. Eating humble pie for supper.

Yes, MNDNR is still actively tagging lake sturgeon. In fact there are three different area offices that are doing it (Hinckley, Lake City, and East Metro).

These numbers may not be exact, plus or minus a few fish for varying reasons, but since 2003, we have tagged 634 lake sturgeon in the lower St Croix River (below Taylors Falls). Between MNDNR and angler reports, there have been 243 recaptures. Quick and dirty math says that is a 38% recapture rate. However, some fish have been recaptured multiple times, sometimes as many as 5 or 6 times.

That is all I’ve got for now. Got to run.
