I have a first year Colorado (2015) and absolutely love it. Going on 125,000 miles on it, have pulled boats and trailers, hauled dead deer, tree branches, dirt and everything in-between. She still drives like new. I don’t see myself replacing it in the next two years, barring any unforseen issues. I’ve had next to no mechanical issues (there was a minor recall or two – as to be expected with first year models)
The only thing I noticed is a little hesitation on the downshift – IE, if you need to step on it to pass someone it takes a second to think about it. I asked the dealer about that and was told “that’s how they are.” It’s never been an issue for me. I’d buy another one in a second (possibly a GMC Canyon as I like their slightly beefier body style). All the pick-up I need.
I know a few people who have the newer style Colorado’s and they seem to like them. Haven’t driven one personally however. Did have a 2005 Colorado that had 220k on it before selling.
I am in a new Tacoma for work, replacing my last Tacoma. Last one had 200K on it and only ever gave me one problem. The vent or valve for the gas tank was clogged with dust (I dive alot of gravel) and the engine would cut out and stall. Took a bit to figure out that one. This one only has 10K on it, so can’t tell you how it will be long term. If I did not have heavy pulling to do I would buy a tacoma as a personal truck. When I replace my chevy 2500 it will be with a tundra.

Good to know.
I wouldn’t rule out the new Ford Ranger.
Will have to take a look.
I had a 2006 Tacoma. Traded up for a Tundra in 2015 just so I’d have an excuse to get a bigger boat. I paid $26k for it and got 13k in trade on an 11yo truck with 120k miles on it. I traded in my 2015 Tundra for a 2020 last year. 99k on it and got 1/2 of what I paid for it in trade. It’s probably no different on a Colorado, but I much prefer driving a full size truck in snow and off road when deer hunting. Not enough weight in the rear of the midsized trucks. Probably solved fairly easy with sandbags and whatnot but I’m not very smart.
This may be just the right size for this guy.
Assume this garage/urban parking space motivated? Otherwise, what is the advantage for mid-size trucks? Price and mileage isn’t much different than full-size.
Just my story – but I have a spec garage with a workbench and a bunch of other stuff. Our family vehicle is a 2015 Expedition LE – so my wife gets “the big side” of the garage. No matter how I re-arrange things, I couldn’t fit a full-size – even with a short box. I have a serious utility need, but don’t need to pull or haul anything too huge – and if I did, I’d hook it to the Expedition. When I bought new in late 2014, a Silverado with all of the same options would’ve cost nearly $20,000 more, for frankly not a lot more truck. Towing capacity isn’t all that much less and I didn’t need more given our second vehicle.

No I get that they make sense for the right buyer… I’ve gone down the research rabbit hole myself since I don’t tow anything overly heavy. Space contraints was the only thing I could come up with.
Toyota webiste shows current sticker price on a new Tacoma is only $3,000 less than a Tundra.
The Toyota is going to be at least twice as reliable in my opinion. We see a lot less repairs and big repairs needed on the Tacoma’s then Colorado.

x2. I’m on my fifth Toyota since 2006 and have only had to do routine maintenance on all of them. Prior to that I’ve had two Chevys, a Jeep, a Ford and a Dodge and all of them needed something expensive before they hit 100k or a little over. I’ve heard newer models of all these brands are more reliable now, but the only reason I’d get one is for heavier towing because Toyota doesn’t make a truck bigger than the Tundra…yet. My camper is #9600 and was delivered new, but I have it on a permanent site for now. If I ever have to leave there with it, I’ll need a bigger truck.
City living mostly. Parking garages, softball tourney spots, parking around mpls for work( especially in winter), alleys, list goes on.

Would the new Ford Maverick pickup fit the bill?

Now that’s just silly talk!
I wouldn’t rule out the new Ford Ranger.
They gave me a Ranger in March for a loaner when I had to have a blower fan replaced in my F-150. I thought it was a nice ride. I used to have a Ranger many years ago right out of college. This felt much beefier and bulkier than the one I used to have. I feel like once you go to a full size truck, its hard to go to anything smaller though.
That new ford looks bada$$.
The thought of rolling up to the movie theatre this fall to watch top gun 2 in a new Maverick is pretty tempting.
Spoke with a dealer on it, we’ll see.
Thanks for info fellas, amazed how much I’m out of the loop with this stuff.
Keep in mind the new maverick is uni-body,more like a 4×4 car.May work for some but for a tow vehicle and 4×4 I prefer a full frame front to back.

If i were buying it would be Tacoma.I work on these things daily and i’m a GM man but not so much anymore.I think Toyota is way more dependable.
Beads,
I have a 2017 Colorado. I bought it because of towing capacity and garage space. Been a very dependable vehicle, but my next one will be full size. My kids are older now and need the leg room of the crew cabs
I have no dogs in this fight but those tacomas look pretty nice. I heard the new ranger is very nice. But I find them very awful looking.
That New Ford Maverick looks like a sweet ride
I checked out a demo model at the local dealer the other day. They said the first 100 customers will get a FREE training bra by simply placing an order
(Sorry Beads, I couldn’t resist)

Weird badass was not the first thing I thought of when I googled it.

One liners need to be appreciated no matter the subject.
That’s a solid one right there.
I looked at small trucks and decided neither. Can’t haul anything in the box, Ended up with a grand Cherokee, still can tow and use a trailer for hauling.
I’ve been driving Colorados for 7 years because they are provided by work. I just got out of my lease and went and bought a full size pickup. No single thing was a deal breaker, but improved ride, towing, and room for trips all contributed to me buying a full size.
