Tackle really does catch fisherman

I find it amusing (good thing I can laugh at myself) how tackle varieties in build, size and color really do catch more fisherman than they do fish.

I remember growing up I had a little box about the size of my hand with a few pieces of tackle in it. Fast foward to today and I have a tackle bag for ice fishing that has 3 Plano 3700s in it, not to mention the other items stuffed in the bag.

The fishing shows sure do a great job selling tackle. I’ll admit, I bite.

This is how I stand in a tackle isle… “Woah! Look at that (tackle in question) I don’t have one of those! Well do I need it? I guess one of the 50 I own already aren’t that exact color. I’ll take six.”

And then I go fishing tie maybe 2-5 different baits in a day and the other thousand baits in the boat never get any time. I would hate to think about how many baits I have that have never touched water.

Tonka, I can relate. When I’m in the store that voice in the back of my head just screams, “what if they want that size/color and you don’t have it in your box?”

I guess do what we enjoy. Live for today and have no regrets.

When I watch the IDO shows I have a pad a paper and pen with me and write down what being used. Then go to local stores (usually they don’t have stock) or go online and buy more product.

On a recent trip to Cabela’s to use a $20 off a $100 purchase it hit me how unbelievably large the tackle selection was. I was at about $60 with the reload components I came for and needed to add another $40 to the cart so I could use the coupon. I gave up looking for the Gulp Ice Fishing Maggots I wanted to try out and had to ask my friendly sales associate. He in turn could not find it and had to go consult with another sales person, the two of them finally found it. $4.00 for 15 fake 3/8″ worms? Are they trying to kid me? There are more baits there I have never used than what I have used in my 65 years. I am not a godless commie and am a big believer in free markets, no one is forcing me to buy. It is just one more example of a world that is passing me by.

My wife always asks me why I need to buy more ice fishing jigs when I have tackle boxes full of stuff. My response ‘because I don’t have these or these are new and I need to try them or I know these will kill it this year’. Then I fall back to my top 5 lures/jigs every year haha…. but it doesn’t matter it’s fun for me to organize and look at my beautiful collection of jigs, especially when the lights are off and they all glow )

I agree. As I age I am finding that I enjoy the planning, preparing and anticipation of the season/trip/hunt as much if not more than I do that actual thing I was getting ready for.

Wow I agree with Jesse most of those raps you mentioned ROCK.

RRR can testify I have several times caught my limit from shore at Everts Resort using a Rippin Rap.

Not sure what your doing wrong but you need to fix it !

I wasn’t stupid enough to fall for the Banjo Minnow, but in my youthful stupidity, I was sucked in by the Flying Lure.

Think of it this way. You have done a service to the lucky lure that was passed buy many times buy a suspecting eye of wonderment. Now it gets to go on a boat ride in a dark case.
Hmmm, I wonder about the lucky part.

Shhhhhhhhhh! Don’t say things like that. My wife might be listening.

I used to think that I was obsessive compulsive about buying lures and fishing rods and reels. Then, I figured out that I’m a collector. Guilt gone! )
Also, regarding the Banjo Minnow….they work. Now, that I’m thinking about it, I’m going to have to slip a couple of small banjos into my ice tackle bag and give it a try on hard water.

My wife never questions what tackle I buy. In turn I never ask why she needs another top to wear or any other piece of clothes for that matter that she is shopping for. We get along great. peace

I am lucky enough my wife loves to fish! so we both have our own tackle boxes, and yes,a lot of lures never get wet, complacency I guess, but there are never any arguments!!
I love going to cabela’s,bass pro, and fleet farm and am glad they arent close to us as both of us would be working there and owe our check to the store each week!!

My GF always has to ask how many more bags of those plastic things do you need.My usual answer is when I have as many as you have shoes. That usually ends that conversation and I can continue shopping for more bags of plastic things.

I’m embarrassed to say it, but I have a ton of Rapalas I’ve never used because they cost so much and I don’t want to loose them to a snag. I’m slowly beginning to use them.

Can never have too much tackle! Especially when ur buddy whips out something u don’t have and he is slaying them!!! Then the regret of not buying sets in lol

” Especially when ur buddy whips out something u don’t have and he is slaying them!!!”….Brennon.

I don’t worry about it since I began injecting my own plastics. Color? No problem. I don’t fret losing a bait because a few minutes in the shop will have more to offer. Same for jigs.

It takes about 5 minutes to whip up a nice hair jig for the next if a certain color pattern emerges.

I’m in Jesse’s school when it comes to anything ending in Rap for hard baits. I just mentioned elsewhere that the common jigging rap jigged vertically right now will boat a lot of fish. Too many people think because a bait is sold as an ice bait it has no place in open water. How wrong is that?

Ugh…guilty whistling In my defense, though, I was only thirteen years old at the time and had an incredible urge to outfish all of my friends. Never caught one fish on that thing…and that fact still comes up after the 2nd beer.

I was 10 when I got the Flying Lure set for Christmas. We used to go to my aunt’s cabin on Ida in Alexandria every year, and the first 3 casts that I made with those stupid things I caught 3 bass… never caught anything else after that, but for the rest of the summer I had those with me everywhere I went.
