In our latest episode “Trolling For Lake Erie Walleyes,” the team utilized planer boards with Rapala Tail Dancers and Husky Jerks. The walleyes were suspended over structure in cloudy conditions. In our past experience, the best way to get at these fish is to use a mix of colors that we know perform well under cloudy conditions. We utilized a variety of colors including UV Green, and Purpledescent under the clouds, but we stayed ready with other colors like Chrome Blue in case the sun came out.
To fish these baits, as shown in our episode we ran multiple planer boards. We simply varied the amount of line we let out between the planer board and the Rapala. The outside board ran at 125 feet, the middle board we ran at 100 feet, and the closest planer board to the boat we ran at 75 feet. As always the fish pick the winners when it comes to bait and color selection, so don’t be afraid to change things up in order to find your working pattern.
