Synthetic or not?

I have a 2014 grizzly, don’t run it very much or very hard. I haven’t changed oil yet and am taking it in on Tuesday to MotoPrimo in Lakeville. I said I wanted to run synthetic in it. The guy said why?, its a waste of money just run regular oil.

    Thoughts/opinions anyone?

FYI – last year I was on LOTW and it was about -10 and it didn’t start out on the lake. flame I thought synthetic might help with extreme cold weather starts.

Synthetic oil does seem to help the engine turn over easier when below 0 due to it being so stable and dosent get as thick when cold . Also have the battery checked to make sure it is good.

I run synthetic oil in all my diesel trucks (3) also ran it in my car. Wouldn’t run anything else. Tell your mechanic to do it because that is what you want. He can run what he wants in his own unit.

Low vis synthetic will help in the cold but your better off starting it occasionally in extreme cold. As a whole quads don’t start well in extreme cold weather after sitting especially if your battery isnt 100%. I have a plug in hose heater to get my plow quad going at the cabin when it’s below zero.

How much oil does a quad use, 2 quarts? Seems like pretty cheap “luxury”. Why not?

Thats what I thought. Go synthetic. Mechanic is probably trying to move some conventional because most people coming through the door want synthetic now a days.

I cannot think of a single reason why I wouldn’t run synthetic in any engines nowadays. Especially for any machine that runs in the winter. The superior cold flowing properties of synthetic were one of the principle benefits from day one.

My CanAm calls for synthetic. Even if it didn’t I’d still run it. That extra bit of insurance with cold starts, better wear, longer lasting, etc. outweighs the couple bucks I’d save with Dino oil.

My truck and all my other motors get full synthetic as well.

And I’ve stopped in to Motoprimo a couple times. Needless to say I’ve never given them a cent of my money because I’ve never been all to impressed with the place. Seriously, who doesn’t put price tags on things you’re trying to sell??!!?? One of the reasons I bought my machine from Leo’s South.

Biggest thing is to put a 0-40 or similar oil for all season. It will definately be thinner and easier starting than the oil the wheeler came with. Amsoil and Rotella make a synthetic that is wet clutch compatible.

Step 1, avoid Motoprimo. Step 2, use synthetic oil for your ATV. The low amount of oil ATV’s use, it’s a no brainer. I have a sport quad I ride it HARD and I change the oil after every about 200 miles, which can equate to one weekend sometimes. Even at 2.2qt’s, it’s still inexpensive. My utility machine gets changed once a year with 0W-40 and it runs like a top spring, summer, fall and winter.

MotoPrimo charges a premium for their machines, parts and service. Why? Who knows…In my experience with them, they generally don’t care about the customer. The only dealer I’ve found to be awesome is Danner in IGH, been buying our ATV’s and sleds from Jerry for almost 20 years. Leo’s and Cannon Power is alright also. I went into Motoprimo 2 years ago to buy a brand new Sportsman and they were asking over 2K more than Cannon Power and wouldn’t budge on the price at all, even with almost 1K in accessories…Went into Cannon Power, talked them down a few hundred and they also gave me a deal on accessories…Even Tousley had better prices than MotoPrimo…

I worked with a guy that was a chemical engineer for Exxon. It was pretty interesting to hear his thoughts on Mobil 1 full synthetic. He didnt work there any longer, but was convinced through all of the wear testing they conducted that there is a big improvement in lubrication and protection over conventional oil. He also said it is important to use quality filters. He recommended some sort of glass filter type.

Not to pig-pile or hijack, but finding a worthwhile sport and marine shop is almost impossible. I added it up and I think I’ve bought 17 units (boats, quads, moto-x bikes, road bikes, and snowmobiles) and have been mostly unimpressed with the shops (about 15 different ones). I hear SBC is the exception, which is great to hear. Frank’s in Orr (out in the boondocks) may be another one.

I do I my own servicing on my equipment, and from my perspective, synthetic oil is cheaper that regular…….

For the little extra it costs up front, in the long run it saves way more, IMO. Mobil one in my 4-strokes and amsoil in my 2-strokes. It makes life easier.

I know a guy (don’t we all) who bought his Lund at Franks. They have done a outstanding job on service for him the few times he has needed it. I was so impressed I nearly bought a Lund!! doah Seriously, they are very good.

I use synthetic in everything I own Except my two trail quads. Main reason being I have had issues with my Kawi’s using oil in the past and they went through synthetic faster. I just got in the habit of using regular oil. I change oil often and they are stored in the winter. MY plow quad uses syn and love it.
