My front stuffers like 240 grain .44 cal and 300 grain .44 caliber pills. The 240 in my Optima pistol, the 300 in my Accura rifle. After shooting half a ton of lead and copper down range the two mentioned bullet weights get the nod in the XTP line od bullets. I’ve been toying with the idea of trying the A-frames in the same bullet caliber/weights to see if they will stay on track with my current sighting. One thing I cannot find a ton of info on is how they perform on deer sized animals.
The XTPs are a controlled expansion bullet series and in the weights I use will start open between 900 fps in the 240 grain and max out at about 1900 fps. The current load in the pistol is delivering about 1800 fps and last year’s deer had some real wreckage from the bullet at 15 yards. Past years deer with the 300 grain bullets that top out at about 2100 fps do some damage too if they get into bone larger than a rib….my long rifles both are running right around 2100-2200 fps. Neither bullet will do soft tissue any favors.
My research on the A-Frames is leaning towards a little more control on the expansion rates at roughly the same velocities as the XTPs and perhaps a little less peripheral wound channel damage. Has anyone used the A-Frames on deer sized critters and if so how bad was the wound channel?
