After posting the grouse pic of my belt-fed heavy artillery, it got me to thinking….

Maybe I should try to class up my act a little, so I took a hike last night and shot a couple grouse and a limit of woodcock over proper points….with a little classier of a gun….lol

Although I didn’t wear the proper shooting attire of tweeds and suede leather gloves, it felt good. I recommend it! lol lol toast

Nice worm eater! I didn’t pull the camera out this weekend but 6 ruffies met their demise for my buddy and me. Wed night is Grouse buffet at my house!

I have heard woodcock taste good, but I have never had it myself. How do they compare to ruffed grouse or pheasant?
Could have easily had a woodcock and a ruffie Saturday had a I brought the gun with when I was clearing some shooting lanes for deer hunting. Figures!
I bring it with, don’t see anything. Don’t bring and wouldn’t you know it. -)
The 3 boys thought it was pretty awesome though because none of them had been that close to a bird flushing before and the woodcock was maybe 5 feet from my 6 year old. He said “Whoa, what was that?” I said a flying football. “Huh?” LOL

Refer to my description “worm eater”. I didn’t quit shooting them for nothing.

I would guess people that like liver would love Timberdoodles.

Thank you for your efforts to improve the style points quotient of the average IDO bird hunter. Lord knows we can use all the help we can get.

Well, if they taste like liver, then I wont like them. Glad I didn’t shoot it then. Let those flying footballs and timberdoodles go then I guess.
Or is that some Jedi-mind trick Suzuki to keep me from hunting them? LOL

Woodcock is probably on the complete opposite spectrum of Ruffed Grouse with respect to wild game birds. It’s dark meat and more robust than Hungarians or sharptail. They eat worms so they are also “earthy”. Liver has its own taste so I wouldn’t necessarily compare them.

I think the best attribute of woodies on the table, is that the limit is only three – and there isn’t much meat on them to start with. Their redeeming quality is that they behave very nicely for a pointing dog. I find them pretty easy to hit, and easy for the dog to pin down on point……thats a great combo for dog work.

I have always thought of them as a game bird. Just look at their feathers. Gorgeous. I really really wish I could shoot every time one goes up but I know I wont like eating it. Hell, I dont even shoot rabbits and squirrels anymore and I know I like them!!

Note to self- high time for a rabbit or squirrel supper.

I’ve got some sunflower seed fattened squirrels that are about to disappear. You’re welcome to have them. devil

Dude. The ones that stole all our Halloween decoration corn, and are currently nibbling gourds, have got to be tasty too! Good call.

LOL. I told the FW I was going to start poking a .22 out the window with some of those sub-sonic rounds.

I cooked up two woodcock last night and they were great. Simply sauteed them with onion and a bit of salt. I think the biggest thing is to not overcook them. They are significantly better if they’re still pink. I don’t go past medium well. You could probably even go rare if you like. I think there can be a tendancy to cook wild game so it was well done 10 minutes ago. This gives the dark meat birds that bitter gamey taste.

Yeah, but I have a hill in the backyard with a fairly busy road up top to cover the noise. And our neighbor on that side does not care. devil
