Dealer cost on 6 quarts simi syn Suzuki motor oil, 1 qt lower gear lube and 1 Suzuki oil filter $74.58
Getting mad at the price every year= Amazon search, cross reference oil filter to a Fram, get 6 quarts Sierra simi syn oil and gear lube saves me $42 total on my next service. Funny thing is Sierra products state they meet Suzuki’s specs.
    What do you use?

I use a full synthetic Mobil oil from Walmart. Not sure what the cost of it is. I can never find the semi-synthetic in the correct weight so I use full synthetic. For the gear oil I use Johnson HPF Pro. (My motor is the same as a Suzuki 115 but back in 2006 they painted some white and put Johnson decals on them).

Not that you asked, but I think $74.58 is a fair price for an engine oil and filter, and gear lube change. It’s actually takes me a fair amount of time to do it in my garage. Granted a shop would be better set up to do the work but they’ve got to pay the mechanic and make a little profit too.

To save $42 dollars, powerheads are like $5000 stick with what is recommended fram oil filters are total garbage wouldn’t even run them on an enemys lawn mower just my opinion..

He did not say the dealer was doing the work, he stated the price of the supplies, when purchased from the dealer.

I prefer to stick with brands that are proven, on my oil changes it is mobil 1 and wix filters. Top brands and everything for my oil change is around $35. I donr recall how much the gear lune is, i use amsoil for that.

When’s the last time you knew of a VERIFIED case of a powerhead blowing up from somebody changing their own oil?

Guys act like there is some special magic about the products a dealer uses, like a filter with an OEM name rubber stamped on the side of it was really handmade by virgins on some tropical island and then flown first class to the dealer’s store shelf.

Cut apart any OEM filter and what you’re going to see is a paper element just like a Fram. I’ve used Fram filters on cars, powersports, and heavy equipment for as long as I’ve done my own work (30+ years) and never had a single issue.

I did, however, work in the next office from an engineer who thought I was crazy for WASTING time changing my own oil and doing my own mechanic work on outboards, ATVs, and tractors.

That only lasted until his local Quickee Lube actually had his truck slip off a lift during an oil change. This was in Eden Prarie. Yes, I saw pictures and in fact, I saw the whole bloody mess firsthand. His F250 somehow got put on the lift wrong and the whole truck slid off when it was about 3 feet off the ground. It fell sideways into the lift next to it, causing massive damage to both vehicles and the lifts. The whole mess took 2 days to untangle and another year of fighting with insurance companies to get settled. Both vehicles totaled.

So yeah, every time I hear somebody going off about how “risky” it is to do you own work, I laugh. Like a dealer or “professional” never hoses anything up. I’ve seen stripped spark plugs, stripped/broken bolts, stripped oil plugs, gearcases that got drained and not filled, wrong filters installed, etc, etc, etc. All from your fine quality dealer service.

Yes I do my own work because I have had 2 striped oil pans and one forgot to tighten my oil filter. I am not worried about the filters or the oil as it meets the FC-W certification just like the OEM oil, he!! it could be made in the same place far as I know.
For the guys that say they use Mobil 1, do they make a outboard grade oil? Or do you have a inboard that can run automotive oil?

I have a suzuki outboard and run standard Mobil 1 in it. What additives are you looking for or what advantages do you feel you are getting from the oils you listed?

Marine grade is actually a service certification process. The rating is called FC-W. Marine rated oils have been put through a battery of tests that are specific to marine outboard environments, and operating conditions,(not typical of automotive conditions) such as sustained wide open throttle high RPM , as well as heavy fuel dilution, and corrosion protection, among others. If an oil passes all the tests they get the FC-W service rating issued by the NMMA. This rating was created in recent years with the numerous 4 stroke models that have hit the market, replacing the previously more common carbed 2 strokes.

In reality, common automotive non marine rated oils are likely to be just fine, it just means they were never submitted to NMMA for testing. It’s a costly process and the oil companies do not generally see the marine market as their target, they would benefit from testing.

While I agree that automotive oils may be “just fine”, using automotive rated oils, may void any warranty.

I’ve been running and have done testing on Mobil 1 for over 20 years, not sure if it is the best but it has stood up to everything I have tried it in from outboards to cup cars to alcohol burning dragsters to all my atvs and snowmobiles. It has stood up to the abuse and long change intervals and never let me down. The only time I need to run something else is for motorcycles and ATV’s that have clutches that need the clutch friction modifiers. And the best thing about it is that Walmart carries it for less than $5 a quart.

I got the same motor from 2005, great motor!! I have always run yamalube in mine with the filter from the dealer. I change the oil and filter once a year, so a little extra for supplies isn’t going to hurt anything. That way I know that I am running what my manual recommends.
