Suspended Crappies – Open Water Question

Let’s say your vertically fishing crappies with a jiggin rap in 25′ of open water. Your marking fish off the bottom, that’s pretty easy to place your lure in front of the fish. Now some come in at 15′ of water, how do you get your lure in front of them now? Raise your rod up and hope you guess right? Do you put bobber stops at reference locations?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

My graph will pickup my line under/behind the transducer. What do you have for electronics?

Worst case, grab your vexilar or marcum and use that?

Marking the line would work but if the fish are on the move it could be a pain.

Helix 5, but if it doesn’t show up well.
Vexilar? that’s what I use to anchor up when it’s windy.
    I could try my marcum.

On the toon or the backtroller?

You should be able to dink with settings to dial in your lure. Now its a matter of keeping your lure under the ducer.

I have a helix 9 so I bet if you turn up the sensitivity on your 5 you’ll be able to see it. Otherwise, the marcum would do the trick.

What I have done in the past is vertical jig under my electronics. Sometimes I would have to add a split shot to the line to keep it vertical depending on the wind and current.

Bobber stop is a pain but I do it that way all the time. Then once you mark 15 out open your bail and count the fall time. Use that as a reference. But I tend to fish with out fancy electronics a lot of the times.

Toon, but the troller would actually be a better choice.
    wink

I’ll crank up the sensitivity and see if that helps.

Put a bobber stop on your jigging line, and move it to the depth you want and use that as an indicator. Don’t use your Marcum, someone will have a Vexilar nearby and outfish you, then you’ll get frustrated, the Mrs. will have to cart down a bunch of cases of Hamm’s, and then cart you back up when you come in. Seen it a thousand times! jester

When I see fish at 15 feet I will make a short 10 foot cast wait for the line to come tight then slowly jig down to them. Active Crappies will always come up to bite so even at 10 feet they may come up to bite.

My guess is that your transducer is pointed back too far. Maybe aim it forward a notch.

Or vise versa. But at 15’ down the cone might be a tad small too.

If you drop the Vex down you have the risk of going over your limit if your not careful. whistling waytogo

The length of your outstreched arms are about the same length as your height-then err on the side of being slightly above the fish.
