Like Matt said sushi is the marinated rice not the raw fish. In Hawaii Spam sushi is available everywhere from convenience stores to fine restaurants. But I don’t think you can get a Hamm’s with it.

Most sushi has no seaweed.
Okay then, I just don’t like it. Tried plenty. You’re never going to convince me that I’m missing out.
August 1, 2021 at 6:59 pm #2051816Having had my share in Mn and now living in Maui… very rarely do you get as fresh in Mn as you do next to the ocean. Once it is frozen, it changed the structure… now if you are eating Poke’ or the California rolls, it probably does not matter… but when the slab of Tuna is a foot away and he is carving it up… yeah, HUGE difference in the texture and taste.
August 1, 2021 at 7:26 pm #2051826My guess is those who think uncooked fish is gross likely eat a damn near raw steak.
It may be just as many that think well done is the right way to cook their meat. Gotta cook out the worms, ya know. I grill pork chops or pork tenderloin loin to 145 tops and steaks to 120-130 at the most, including venison backstrap and tenderloin. My FIL and BIL think if there’s a hint of pink to any meat, it’s risky to eat.
My wife doesn’t like fish. Even after 3yrs being stationed in Japan she would rather eat just about anything else. She’ll eat a bite or two of my fish fries but really prefers the sides instead. What kills me is that she likes canned tuna!

Fancy sushi? No thanks. I’ll opt out for wings anyday
ThunderLund78Posts: 2530August 2, 2021 at 8:40 am #2051880I love it and while I realize the Fresh Factor is way low in MN as compared to a costal area or foreign country, I devour it all the same. I have a Coburns and HyVee within walking distance and you buy it off the shelf. Although they prepare it at the counter right behind the shelf. You can watch them do it. Never once have I had any negative effects and tastes fresh as good a sushi restaurant every time. Will probably be my lunch today.

Eel is always cooked. Eels’ blood is poisonous, which discourages other creatures from eating them. A very small amount of eel blood is enough to kill a person, so raw eel should never be eaten. … Cooking unfolds the proteins and renders them harmless.
A North Dakotan, whose house I stay at when duck hunting, refused to eat a medium rare duck breast fresh off the grill. “You need to cook that a little more”, he said. Yet at the bar he’ll devour Tiger Meat: Raw hamburger seasoned and cured, eaten like a dip with crackers.
I told him I’m never eating that. He said it’s safe but the burger has to be freshly ground that day. All the locals were chowing it down.Cody MeyersPosts: 430August 2, 2021 at 9:31 am #2051894Most of it is frozen first to kill parasites. Also makes it just as fresh in MN as anywhere else.
This right Here…..I love sushi and have not had any “negative” experiences.
August 2, 2021 at 9:39 am #2051898Love Sushi, and my 3 year old does as well! Although he usually gets potstickers and cooked sushi options. In my experience most people that hate it haven’t tried good sushi, went in “knowing” they’d hate it or have a MN pallet that thinks pepper is too much spice

Ketchup, the Scandinavian hot sauce.
August 2, 2021 at 11:38 am #2051934I’m not a fan of sushi, but my niece-in-law wanted it for her birthday celebration years ago – the rest of us had pizza. She asked me to try some of the sushi and I have no idea what it was. I tried to bite it in half and that didn’t really work because it was some kind of roll or something, if I can recall. So I ended up just swallowing the thing whole so I didn’t have to chew and taste it, and she said that’s cheating!! LOL I said I ate it, didn’t I?? Fun times.

It’s getting a little better in central WI. 20yrs ago hot sticks or jerky from the butcher meant extra black pepper. Every Mexican restaurant that opened did well when the tourists came up from IL in summer, but many closed after a year or two. There are several in the Stevens Point/Plover area now and even a few sushi and Thai places. My wife’s always ordering the spiciest thing they have and the servers are always trying to talk her out of it. She’s nuts.
