I stayed till two so definitely wasn’t you I talked with. Had a flurry of action around one, three chases and a strike and a miss. I would say the earlier you get there the better. Talked with another old timer said he’s been getting coho in front of the Lester in 45 , tingler and waxys, also said same spot in 15 to twenty getting herring.

I’m sure that old timer will be thrilled you gave up his spot and advise to the entire planet……

If you think fishing in front of the lester river is a secret then you obviously have not been down there . From twenty first Ave all the way past Brighton beach looks like a giant fishing tournament. Trust me I’m not giving out any secret spot that this guy has had all to himself. Good day

Fished in front of lester/brighton Saturday morning in 60′. Caught a few herring, but no coho. I would say there were well over a 100 shacks in that area. We ventured north to get away from the crowds per some locals advice and did not mark a thing.

B- man , I looked back though this thred and seen that you have been down there so my apologies. Now as far as giving up a spot I heard about to the whole wide world , I disagree. We get a chance maybe what every five years maybe to fish on Lake Superior, witch is one of the largest fresh water bodies in the world. If I can help someone to catch a fish in what could be there only chance in life to do so I will. I thought that is what IDO is about.

A friend and I had some beginners luck out of 21st on Sat. 83 fow and found 3 very aggressive lakers on the bottom. All 3 hooked at 81 feet, lost one at the hole, 2 in the bag.

Can’t believe the snow on the lake was so thin. I was expecting a miserable trudge. Most drifts were stiff enough to stay on top. Getting out to 83 feet was some work, but I’ve had much worse hauls. My usual lake is now a no go without tracks.

About 8 inches of ice, where it wasn’t stacked. Hit water after drilling 3 feet and still had ice below that on one hole. I see how garage size ice chunks can form.. Cracks/tremors seem a little scarier out there. At least they were few and mild. Of course one had to be directly underneath me.

There’s a portable just off and to the side of the canal in Duluth this morning. Also, there is a portable off the end of the old breakwater in Two Harbors. More people are shifting towards the end of the breakwater in Two Harbors.

Nice Fish! A buddy and I are planning on going out Saturday to try our luck for coho and lakers. We are hoping to get out there right at first light if possible. We have no idea what to expect regarding parking. I hear a lot of people talk about 21st Ave E and Brighton Beach as access points. Where do you park at these locations? Looking at the map for the Brighton Beach area do you just park along Brighton Beach Road. I am sure it will be pretty obvious once we get there, from the sounds of all the people out, but would like to try and have a better idea if any one can help.

On 21st it is street side parking, and the same goes for Brighton beach. It is easy to figure out, the piled up ice sheets at Brighton will add a little time to your walk. If you have a hub I would go for that instead of a flip over. My two man flip was more work to get through that maze of ice than I wanted. 100 yds of this was a chore with a big sled.

Ouch. That ice does look like a mess. I thought 21st was pretty piled up but not sure if it was as bad as that picture from Brighton.

When I fished off 21st the parking was on any nearby side street off the highway. I dropped my gear and parked maybe a quarter mile or so away. I got there at probably 9 am and it was pretty obvious where people were walking on from.

I’ve never been to the Brighton area so can’t help there.

Was up for the weekend with the Luke and Jakob from Northwoods Angling and also PJ Vick. Went about a half hour north of Duluth for my first time laker fishing. What a blast! Only caught two lakers myself but got four coho and Jakob and PJ had 4 landed lakers in the first three hours of our trip. Oh, and got a cell phone back from 70 ft of water……Ha!

Actually it was PJ’s. Marcum Camera and a Jigging Rap. He snagged the speaker hole. It was still on when he pulled it out of the hole. It was pretty epic. I have it on video.

I think that’s almost, if not more, amazing than catching lakers on superior through the ice!

also, pretty sweet pics of the fish under the ice.

It was pretty amazing. I’m not sure how he got the treble into the speaker hole but he did. Then got it all the way up 70ft back topside.

Pics were with one of my gopros. Got some cool footage.

I checked Two Harbors a bit ago and there looked to be a portable on the lake side of the wall this morning. Wasn’t snowing there yet but the system wasn’t too far from there and headed north.

Thanks for the info on the parking situation and the heads up on the piled up ice. Looks like it will be some work! To be legal do you just need to have a trout/salmon stamp in addition to your fishing license. Also, what are the limits on herring(cisco)?

Yes, angling in Minnesota Waters requires a Minnesota trout stamp. Also, no limit on ciscoes in Minnesota Waters.

Thanks to all who have been sharing info. Did the superior lake trout thing back in 14 and had an absolute blast. Got my most surreal ice fishing photo to date.

Probably heading up Friday morning. Looking like forecast is for light W winds, hopefully it stays light. I really don’t want to be the citiot who gets stranded on the ice.

Hey Guys, I have never tried Superior before. Looking at the possibility of getting out there tomorrow (2/23) in the afternoon for a couple of hours. If I’m honest, I’m a little sketched out to even step out on the ice up there.

    Questions:
Wondering are the current ice/wind conditions safe? I know it can change quickly, any opinions on if it will be safe tomorrow? What should I be looking for as a sign to either get off the ice or not go on it at all. Finally, is there a spot that is usually more safe than others?

I would like to fish Duluth area, but am open to heading further North (within and hour) if that means a safer experience. I am planning on stoping into Marine General to pick up some tackle, any pointers on what they’re biting on?

My luck I will end up being the “Citiot!” But, with a little help from you all maybe I could avoid the Darwin award!

    Thanks in advance!

Minnesota anglers over the age of 62 do not need the trout stamp.

I think tomorrow should be pretty safe. Don’t get too comfortable in your shack and keep an eye on the weather, if other people are leaving, maybe get going.

I’m planning on going out early tomorrow north of the lester. I got a couple on #8 white snap rap off the bottom in 120′ Thursday morning. Shoot me a PM.
