Sure did! It’s a blast rippin’ 1/2oz to 7/8″ jigs on it. It was a nice change up from the delicate panfish bite I had been battling.

Going to try and get up there next week if the ice holds. I’m hooked on the lake trout drug now. I won’t be surprised if the wife lists “lake trout addict” on the dissolution of marriage papers. laugh

    Sounds fun. Good reports!

Is that current normal for Lake Superior? Were you seeing variable ice thickness as a result, like when you’re on a river? I hate fishing on current.

Some current out there is pretty normal, especially closer to the tributaries. The amount of current out there last weekend was a little abnormal.

I’ve gone twice this year and it is definitely addicting. I’m hoping to go up on the 15th for the weekend again if the ice is still good.

Instead of creating family issues with this fishing non-sense, take the wife along and stay the night at a nice hotel. Give her free reign on the shopping. Take her out for a good dinner that evening and spend some time in a hot tub. Duluth has some great dining and plenty of shopping on the hill that’s easy enough to get to. If you’re getting the cold shoulder when you get home you’re doing things all wrong and you get zero pity here.

Not looking for pitty,Tom. She tells me to go. She has no interest and we take turns watching the kids so we can each partake in our hobbies. my divorce joke was tongue in cheek.

Let us know how you do. If I get up there I’m going to try deeper as well.

Is there enough snow to justify snow shoes? Been a couple weeks since I was up.

Buddy talked to marine general last weekend he said they be out with the ice breaker next week, anyone else hear that? Is there a site that has a schedule for that kind of thing? Wanted to try one more time, skipping this weekend figuring there is lots of ice and would be around for a while…..

Seems very early. In 2014 it was the end of March.

Out off the French this morning. Got a late start but less than 10 minutes in and this one came topside. 27.5” and headed for the smoker this weekend. White/pink 4” paddle tail on a pink jig head.

The timing Marine General quoted seems about right. In 2014 they actually started on March 10th. 2015 was March 12th.

I’m not disputing when the locks open. They start cutting the ice in Duluth a while before that. 3/10/2014 and 3/12/2015 are the dates they started cutting out of Duluth those years. Check duluth shipping news if you don’t believe me.

I’m not disputing you either. Not sure why your panties are in a bunch. Just posting what I found.

How the ice around Gooseberry and Two Harbors? There are some beautiful lakeside cabin rentals up that don’t break the bank. It would be awesome to be able to walk out from the cabin and fish.

Probably want to check to make sure they are open. Many close in the winter months.

I can tell you that the satellite photos aren’t really showing much ice up past two harbors. I’d say encampment is about where the main sheet ends.

Silly question, but what affect do the ice breakers usually have on the ice as far as we’re concerned? Does it mostly break up the ice further out in the main lake or is there a good chance the near shore ice that we’re fishing on gets busted up shortly after they come through?

I’d like to get back up there but the earliest would be the weekend following this weekend.

None unless you plan on crossing over the shipping lane. It’s only a 50′ wide path through the ice.

Very true. I’ve been up there 4 of the last 5 winters. The rates are cheaper and you can rent by the day instead of by the week. Gooseberry Cabins. Great winter hiking and snowshoeing.

I took this photo on March 24, 2014. The ice breaker came through, then this vessel. Unfortunately, the fishing was slow that day.

What do you all think about the heavy snow coming this weekend? I wasn’t too worried about snow staying on the ice up there with the winds but heavy snow could be a different story. Planning on getting up there next weekend.

I doubt it’ll make any big difference. I really think the wind will take care of most of it. They really aren’t forecasted to get as much snow as in the cities.

Not a trip cancelling situation by any means.

Marine Genral on London road. By far the best bait shop in the state imo.
