15# Power Pro Super Slick > Alberto knot (modifier Albright) > 6-10’ of 20# Seaguar Blue Label Fluoro > triple swivel > 1-2’ of 20# Seaguar Blue Label Fluoro > lure

I’d prefer 20# mainline but it was what I had on my summer reels.

I was using a crank bait snap to the lure but I found out that one tiny little error changing baits will result in the loss of a fish of a lifetime. Never again.

So the good news is Jamin got a nice trout right away this morning in about 85′. I picked up a coho earlier in 52′ in our first spot using mahtofire’s recommended gold tungsten with chartreuse tail. We marked a lot of stuff the remainder of the day, fished out to 130′ and back, but couldn’t make anything go so left at 2:45.

We accessed out of Brighton Beach, parked in the mid lot south of the Pavilion and entered near the rounded stone building. The path from that point out was actually easy, not a goat path at all.

I just saw 4 portables at Two Harbors well outside of the breakwater off the end. One appears to be almost on the first hump. The 52 footer.

    That was me waytogo

We tried two of the humps out there today and yesterday.

It sucked, iced four very small fish all day yesterday between five guys (like not much bigger than a cisco)

Went out this morning, had a few chases but no takers. I think they were small fish again by the way they looked on the graph.

It was a tough couple days, but better than being at work lol

Going to hit Brighton/Mcquade/Knife up next time and look for bigger fish.

I’m pretty sure that the really good fish are still down in the Duluth basin. Those humps are hot beds when the weather warms up. Early August is when we begin to stick big trout on or near the humps and they’ll hang around somewhere in the vicinity thru the close of the season.

How much ice were you sitting on out there Bman?

Nice job Jamin and fishwater, there alot more fun to catch then a walleye. I wonder if anyone ever gets a red fin laker out there.

It varied a little, but I’d say 10-14″.

There’s a couple pressure ridges and cracks in the area that you’ll need to get across, so use extra caution.

Some of the cracks had just an inch or two of ice skimmed over…..

I led the convoy on foot with a chisel and checked suspect areas.

Way to go! Glad you got a couple at least! It definitely wasn’t a hot bite when I was up there either. I was a bit farther north than you were though.

There are definitely big fish north of Duluth. I saw a few giants come from right where I was fishing. It just wasn’t on my rod!

I’m hoping to make one more trip up there but we will see how the schedule and the ice holds up.

Sounds like fun. Definitely something I would do. They seemed well prepared.

You better do it soon! the next time we will get ice good enough on LS to make that journey could be many, many years… heck, it might not happen again in our lifetimes. I don’t think non-locals realize how rare it is to get ice like this and for this long.

Throw ropes and ice picks aren’t going to do much for you when you fall in 7 miles from shore without a heater or shack to warm up. Hypothermia would likely get to you before you got back to shore. A wet suit doesn’t do much good after you are already wet… maybe they were already wearing wet suits under their gear? No mention of lifejackets either… At the very least, I’d be wearing an inflatable.

According to the climate change scientists this type of weather at our latitude will become more frequent due to climate change. coffee Apparently this is what climate change is like. roll

Makes sense. Global warming. Make more ice. I need some global cooling. No ice. No snow then, eh?

Came up today after a long wait and only had 2 follows with 1 strike. Came out at around noon any tips?

Too be completely honest that sounds like an average day.

My only tip would be to move more, but even then it’s up to the fishing gods.

Yesterday we landed two fish between four guys…..36 man-hours for two fish….

We fished 90-155′, outside and bouncing around all day, with maybe a half dozen good chases.

Lake trout fishing is a low number game in Superior. Expect to catch 0-5 fish any given day (obviously there can be outstanding 5+ fish days, but I haven’t had one yet….)

Also we marked a bunch of fish on the bottoms in the deep but they were very sluggish and would just come up a foot or two. Any idea what they were?

Last year I was down there on the sliver of ice in front of 21 ave in around 70 ft and also had those fish on bottom. I kept downsizing until I had a plain hook and half a wax worm and came up with not kidding a ten inch smelt!,only thing I caught.that’s probably whats down there smelt

I think the fish are just saying no to pretty much everything right now with the pressure they are receiving. Everyone and their mother has been throwing lures at them for the past month. Going to have to start thinking outside the box to get them to bite. Had 4 groups of friends go up this weekend and none of them got a fish.

We got 2 cohos, 10 herring, and my first laker. Caught the laker up in fifty ft coho fishing with my perch rod. Also had a laker on for about 5 sec.later in the day Out deep with the heavy gear pulling drag and popped off. Had one more strike later and a freaking swing and a miss…. Still mad lol

Anyone else see a large amount of current this weekend? It was a new spot for me so wasn’t sure if it was because of the area or if it was all over the place. It was way worse than any other outing I’ve had out there this year.

Smackem33, wondering if you’d share any advice on getting the herring. I setup infront of the lester river in around 45 ft for them, but seemed like everything I tried would just scare them away. I was hoping to add a few to the smoker when I do some trout next time. Thanks

Lots and lots of current in the 5 spots I hit this weekend. I only found one spot where I could mark my lure without the transducer in another hole 6 ft away from where I was fishing. This was the theme with everyone I talked to as well.

Gino the herring would swim through 15-20ft down about 10ft thick on the vex. We were jigging small gold and silver Swedish pimples loaded with euro larva. Years past…2014 2015 we would only catch cohos with this set up. And then after getting our limit take the euro off and spank the herring. This year much slower action and much tighter window. Kept the euro on hoping for cohos and getting herring. We got set up well before first light and had fish below us steady till about 8, north a lil of the Lester.

Way to stick with it. Time on task looks to be the key.

    Sounds fun. Good reports!

Is that current normal for Lake Superior? Were you seeing variable ice thickness as a result, like when you’re on a river? I hate fishing on current.

Current is fairly normal, never had it be to point where it was making fishing hard.

    Still great ice around Duluth.
