The bay was capped this morning, a good stretch of cold weather coming. Fingers crossed.

Superior Ice (Duluth)

Anything can happen but this really hasn’t been an ideal winter that would make solid ice out there.
Fingers crossed.
Ice CapPosts: 2151January 18, 2019 at 9:24 am #1827127I’m just south of you. The bay is far and away better during early ice but I refuse to go out there on 3 or 4 inches like a lot of guys do but that’s when you catch the big eyes. Way too much current out there to be on that kind of ice imo. After early ice the fishing really tapers off.
Ice CapPosts: 2151January 18, 2019 at 9:38 am #1827136Are you referring to superior or the harbor?
Park Point/Canal Park bay..
January 18, 2019 at 10:35 am #1827162I know you’re referring to the harbor but I assume the op is referring to Lake Superior.

+1 . LS is currently iced up from a little past 21st Ave E to what looks like around Wisconsin point or so (can’t exactly tell from my vantage point). LS had about the same amount of ice formed yesterday morning and then as soon as the breeze picked up, all the ice blew out. I’m guessing the same thing will happen today at some point.
January 18, 2019 at 11:41 am #1827195All it takes is enough mass to withstand the wind and sun. Lots of cold calm nights ahead.
January 18, 2019 at 4:17 pm #1827323Looks like the ice sheet hung on. The next two nights are double digits below zero with relatively light wind. If you ignore the 6″ of snow on Monday, it’s ideal conditions.
Aaron SnyderPosts: 28January 19, 2019 at 2:37 am #1827497Is it realistic to think it may hold on until next weekend? Temps look good.
Have wanted to try for lake trout through the ice for a few years.Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559January 19, 2019 at 7:22 am #1827509I just did a camera check and the canal has open water with some broken shale.
Two Harbors is open yet in the harbor and I see there were 8 guys lined up on the breakwater, possibly fishing the lake side…..casting that is.
Flags at Canal Park and Two Harbors were both moving well but not straight out so there is some wind this morning from the north to north-west so any ice along the MN coast above the canal might get a start but could possibly blow out today. Not certain what the air temps are in either location but the water is smoking this morning so its cold.
Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559January 19, 2019 at 11:11 am #1827548It does. Primarily that there are some low, slow rolling waves stirring the ice pot right now. lol
Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559January 19, 2019 at 12:17 pm #1827562The wind shifts to the N then light from the NE tomorrow. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.
January 19, 2019 at 7:16 pm #1827622Ice looked like a solid sheet this morning, then was broken by waves about 10 am. I went up the shore a good distance not much ice north of Duluth. Think the weather Monday will be interesting. Think we will have a significant portion of pack/clumpy ice the freezes together after monday, and hopefully some more solid glare ice that forms during the real cold stuff coming after Monday. Obviously can’t play any games with this so its all up to luck and conditions staying in our favor.
Feel like there is enough “mass” there already to provide for a good sheet.
Again Fingers crossed
January 21, 2019 at 8:23 am #1828006looking good this morning, we will see what happens with this weather moving in
January 21, 2019 at 8:53 am #1828023Some really nice weather coming up. Thursday will be the test. Let us know if knuckleheads start venturing on the ice this week.
January 22, 2019 at 9:02 am #1828393Ice pack is still around. Snow actually making it easier to tell where big cracks are. This weekend is looking awful good.
January 22, 2019 at 9:44 am #1828404I also see the ice floe from the south shore has moved to the north shore. Two Harbors has ice as well but I expect that to be gone by tomorrow. Thursday the NW wind is gonna give it a a real good test. Keep your fingers crossed.
Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559January 22, 2019 at 10:19 am #1828411The ice in the TH harbor isn’t attached very well yet. The lake is wide open and there’s open water around the breakwater.
Its young ice yet and any kind of good blow will tear this young ice stuff up.
January 22, 2019 at 10:35 am #1828417Not sure why people keep bringing up the harbor in this thread. The ice behind park point is darn near 20 inches and shipping season is over. The canal rarely locks up.
The spot where we need the ice to stick is 21st to Kitchi Gami park.

And this
Obviously we need to use caution, and I wouldnt necessarily clear out my weekend schedule. Just providing updates for those that don’t live in Duluth.
zooksPosts: 922January 23, 2019 at 11:36 am #1828731Biggill can you provide a link of the website you use for satellite images. The one I typically use is not updating images due to the government shut down. I’d like to see how ice is progressing around Duluth and in the apostles. Thanks
It’s likely this one, the satellite updates the MN/WI region (USA3) around noon each day.
January 23, 2019 at 12:20 pm #1828755Yup. That’s the one.
It’s all gonna change tomorrow once the wind hits it.
CharlesPosts: 1936January 23, 2019 at 12:28 pm #1828763Well if the temps stay the same and the wind is clam, next weekend I bet you could sneak out there.
January 23, 2019 at 4:25 pm #1828810Yep, if the ice is there tomorrow when I’m walking out of the office then we are golden. If not then I think we likely missed our shot this year.

Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559January 24, 2019 at 8:20 am #1828947I see open water in front of the canal on the lake in Duluth but that’s a ways away from 21st. They do have wind.
At Two Harbors the lake side of the breakwater is wide open and there were 5 people out on the wall in the wind. They seemed fairly stationary so I’ll assume they were casting. The harbor looks locked up but things can change pretty fast.
