Sunk on P2

Pulled out of Lions Saturday morning and after I got on plane and rounded the first buoy I hit something under water that almost threw me out. 14 foot with 25 horse with no floatation (bought it that way). Not ideal and hoped to upgrade. Motor still running and the prop seemed OK. Then I looked down and it was filling with water very fast. Knowing I had to get back NOW I went full throttle back to the channel. Boat is slowing down as its filling with water. My stuff and gas tank is already floating as I hit the first channel full throttle and made the turn at Wllies then down the last channel. Thought it was going down on the turn but kept going. Made it to the ramp virtually sunk and beached it on the ramp. With the help of 2 guys at the ramp (thank you) and an hour and a half, we got it on the trailer. 15″ gash towards the back extending into the transom. After seeing the damage, I cannot believe I got it back. If I was only a lttle further down river, it would be gone, it was that close. Took to the shop today for an estimate and the hull is totaled. If you fish P2 much you know me or fished by me. I had this tan Starcraft for years, good bye old stead! Always wear your preserver on the river, you never know…

WOW!!! I have hit a bunch of stuff down there over the years. 14 foot welded flat boat. My boat is a tank, but I never take anything for granted.

Not sure what I hit but the damage almost looks like I hit a pipe. Left a perfectly round dent in the transom as it exited. Looking for a 14 foot tiller long shaft. Basic Hull would be best so I can transfer my motor and EQ but whatever gets me on the water will work. Have my eye on a couple of options. I do not want my season to end, I fish all winter when the river is open. Thanks for everybody’s comments.

Wow. I’ve seen you out there as well. So glad you were able to get to shore safely and salvage your motor at least. Thanks for posting, great reminder to all to have their PFD on and their wits about them especially in cold water.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you hit a red channel marker what was still attached to the chain and submerged just under the surface. I seem to recall seeing a partially submerged red can just downstream from Lions after the floods receded this summer. It was on the channel edge just above a floating red can that was positioned where it should be.

I’ve seen a handful of cans like that over the years on P2 and P3. They’re scary for sure. It’s funny… sometimes they’ll bob above and below the surface for a few minutes and then for the next several minutes they’ll be totally submerged. The high water this summer moved a bunch of cans out of position.

Ya, I would like to see pics as well, I have to ask, did you report it to anyone in authority?? you could potentially save someone’s life if you did.

Were you heading upstream or downstream? I would guess you were going upstream. Up past the 1st bouy they had material for mooring equipment from the last spill at the refinery. You would have had to been up inside the dam to find it though.. Going downstream outside the cans has been clean. Super clean this fall. Just curious if it was up or downstream of the launch.
