Took a day trip up to Mille Lacs and went out of Isle looking for smallmouth and walleye. Got on the lake around 730 and started out for smallies. Caught a 17 inch walleye on a deep crank which should’ve told me something. Didn’t catch a single smallmouth in the morning. Finally gave up and switched to trolling crawler harnesses at .5-1 mph. First time trolling for walleye for me. I really enjoyed it and it produced a few fish for us before our lunch break.
After lunch we went up north to the mud because people were saying they were catching bigger fish up there. No luck for us. Spent two hours up there. The wind had stopped completely and the sun came out which I made me think they shut off. So we took a trip over to Garrison and started trolling bottom bouncers with crawlers and that was the ticket. 1.5-2 mph worked for us. Nothing big but caught fish. Topped off by finally catching a nice smallmouth on a bottom bouncer after working so hard for them in the morning! Fished the edges of the flats in 18-25 ft. This trolling game might turn this bass guy into a little more of a walleye fisherman.
