While this applies to ‘eyes too, I thought I’d put this here since fishing spoons for panfish is so alien to me and I’m hoping some die-hard spoon fisherman or woman will share their favorite lures and colors.
Spoons in the winter is pretty standard fare for most the species in this section but the videos and articles I’ve been seeing online lately on their summertime use has me interested in picking up various spoons for “something different” to add to my fishing methods.
Some even claim casting and/or jigging spoons will “out-fish live bait” and will do so on a pretty regular basis……so my interest is tweaked. Normally I’m a jig and live bait fisherman (or naked hook and live bait) but I’d like to expand that a little.
Anyone casting or jigging spoons through the summer months for various species and willing to share what brand/size etc?
I’m sure colors will vary by the hatch but info on that and the clarity of the body of water is also appreciated.
I’ve got two lakes nearby and they are about total opposites. One is 1600 plus acres and gin clear with some breaks and humps but has huge spans of almost flat basins with a max depth of 90 something and the second is a quarter of the size of the first, medium clarity and has huge numbers of sharp breaks, humps, and only one end and one section just off center being pretty flat. Neither have huge topwater weeds due to both being “party lakes” during the day so it’s either early and late day fishing or…..night time.
Both have surveys showing decent numbers of LARGE perch and the first one has had monster gills come out of it occasionally along with it being known for it’s largemouth population and occasionaly eater walleye. The second lake is one of the few in the area riddled with white bass and numerous crappie along with the perch but neither lake has more than a few, if any, pike.
Watching the various videos on youtube I’m compiling a list of a few spoon types but one could wipe out his SS in short order buying the HUGE number different types out there so……any suggestions from people experiencing decent “luck” using spoons would be appreciated.
Photos of spoons and/or fish….a plus!!
Thanks in advance.
