Ma and I were in New Ulm Weds and yesterday. We got a gift package for a bed/breakfast, brewery tour at Schells and a dinner paid for at George’s, a nice restaurant at the opposite end of the block that the Glochenspiel Park is on.
The B&B was outstanding and we still have a 50% credit for another stay, maybe this winter. The meal was outstanding….steak, shrimp and ribs. The restaurant is smallish and when we walked in there was a table for two sitting there….the only table left. We never saw an empty table there and we didn’t leave until about 7:30. Crazy busy place.
Of course we had to do the brewery again. Every time we are in that town we hit that up and again we were not let down. Ma got her dose of Schell’s Shocked, the grapefruit infused beer. A couple of the others in the tasting weren’t too bad but a couple were pretty “hoppy”, drinkable but right on that line towards maybe not. I was a little let down that they didn’t have the Hauenstein the bottle now, but I guess its all contract brewing and not under the umbrella of their own label. All in all, its a super fun visit for a couple hours. The other small brewery and winery on the north side of town are not open until weekends so we missed them.
That ugly weather that hit this area Weds afternoon also went thru New Ulm at about 3:30. Ma went into a thrift store to see what she could find and I sat in the van and read. I just became aware that things had gone black [darned close to literally] when the wind hit, then the rain. The door to the store was twenty feet away an I could not see inside the store and at one point one of those huge American flag across the road came close to bending the pole it was on enough to come within a couple feet of touching the ground. Ma’s 10 minute stop turned into a 45 minute venture.
Lotta fun, lotta tense and home safe to find 2 1/2″ in my gauge.
