Backed the boat into the garage and grazed a metal cabinet corner into the motor cowling (SOB!!!)

Anybody have experience fixing this? I found the Yamaha touchup spray paint online for $20, is it as simple as some light sanding and spraying over the scratched area?

Yes I have experience fixing cowlings. No, there is no chance it’s a simple as light sanding and spraying over the scratched area. What you’ll end up with if you do that is a poorly painted scratch.

See Gino’s comment above. I would take it to a body shop and have them do all the prep work. Spraying paint is the easy part. It’s getting all the prep work right so that it’s smooth and perfect that is difficult.

I did bodywork for nearly 50 years. One of my worst nightmares with paint match was Yamaha grey. Trying to repair, that little spot will grow like the national debt to overtake the whole side of the hood. The only way to blend the spot in is to remove all the decals. Then clear coat the entire hood. If you can get a touchup bottle. Just try to FILL the scratch. Keeping it all within the scratch void. It could look 50% better. Or go with the decals. Don’t think the fish will notice. First scratch always sucks.

Clear coat it and leave it alone, you can tell everybody who asks about it that you tied into a 60 inch plus musky and it tried to take you out completely by sinking the boat when it tried to rip the motor off.

Clicking on the picture. The scratch is through all layers of the finish. To look like new. It would need to be feathered back a couple inches, primed and blocked out. Again, involving new decals and clear coat. Last thought, add a stripe that ties in with a color on the boat. That’s the opposite of what I did. Painting a Yamaha grey panel on an Alumacraft boat that was side swiped.

Add me to the group that says fixing it will be a costly pain. Find a decal or accent decal that matches your boat color or brand and be done with it.
