Suggested Treble Hooks for Walleye

    Hey Guys,

I fish Mille lacs quite a bit. I find I have quit a bit of eyes fall off half way up the water column. I am thinking about switching treble hooks on my go to spoons. What size treble hooks would you recommend? I am also thinking about going to braid and a mono leader. Just don’t want to deal with the freeze up. Would braid be worth it? I know I have the right rod, a TUCR Precision. What’s your thoughts?

    Thanks!!

Sometimes, they just aren’t hooked, but they bite down hard on the lure.

Owners and Gamakatsu hooks…almost never lose a hooked fish.

I would suggest braid on a precision I don’t think the hooks are the issue.

Do you have problems with freeze up though? Pretty much all I do is hole hope and everything I read is that braid freezes up to easy. Is that over exaggerated?

I use braid on a Precision and yes, freezing on the line can be an issue but I mostly fish in a heated house so that’s not much a problem. Hole hopping when it’s truly cold would be an issue.

As far as treble hook size, the standard treble hook on jigging spoons I’ve found is matched with the lure is good enough. I’d assume you’re using a minnow head hooked to just one hook of the treble?

Not sure how many you’re losing or other variables such as depth.

The more I keep at it though, the more I learn that you’ll lose as many as you successfully bring through the hole.
