For those of you who have side imaging, which frequency do you use the most, 400ish, 800ish or 1000+. I will typically be using it in the river in the spring and shallow water under 20′ in summer.

What are you looking for? Fish? Structure?

For everyday fishing, I use the 455 as a search tool. If I see a tree or rockpile I want to really get better detail on, then I switch to 800. You get better detail with the latter, but you have to change settings as well. I run GARMIN by the way.

With hummingbird, at least, and probably all brands, you’ll want to run the highest frequency 99% of the time. The lower frequencies are useful in deeper water. The higher the frequency, the better the detail will be assuming it’s not too deep (the higher frequencies don’t penetrate the water as effectively, thus the deep/shallow commentary). Notice that FBRM is running the 455 in more than 20’ of water.

Day in, day out, no matter the depth, ( if you see me deeper than 16 feet, I’m not having a good day) 455, at least until the live is full and I’ve caught all that I want to. Then and only then will I switch to the higher frequencies to play around with. I believe I’m the only person underwhelmed with mega. (Solix 12) The range of 455 is so much more important to me than the lack of range or increased clarity with mega freq.
