Hello…I would like to get info on what pound test sufix ice braid to use on different species of fish. And what size and length of fluorocarbon leader when needed. Thanks!

So which fish are you targeting?

Hey buddy…I’m targeting all different species of fish. From panfish to big lake trout, those with teeth and without.

I use a 10 lb test in a 2 lb diameter and tie on leaders for everything. You can hardly clip this stuff. Pike are another story. Last great too. Ive had same line for three seasons now. So worth the money. JMO

I just change the leader out for what I’m targeting. Typically flouro of varying tests depending on what I’m doing that day.

As far as test, I don’t really want more than 10lb on a little ice rod. That said, I’m not targeting trophy lake trout.

One downside with all braids, freeze up for fishing outside. While I love Suffix ice braid, I rarely use it when outside.

I also like 10#. Easier to tie IMO. However, the freezing keeps me away 90% of the time.

In my opinion, braid really becomes a benefit when you’re fishing deeper than 20 feet or targeting larger fish. It can be annoying (like mentioned above)when fishing outside in sub-freezing temps with the build up of ice, make sure you get a braid with treated line like 832 ice braid if you’re set on using braid. I don’t use it at all for pan fish, but I am planning on testing it out for Lake-bound Stream Trout this winter for better hook ups. Whenever I’m using braid I attach a Fluorocarbon leader (Suffix makes a great Fluoro) via a swivel. On my Quicktip I have 6lb 832 ice braid, with an anywhere from a 4-8lb test fluoro leader depending on what I’m targeting. I’ve yet to have my line get cut from pike coming in to steal the meal with the Suffix 8lb Invisiline Fluoro, and I’ve caught dozens upon dozens this year between 12-35″ while fishing for walleye. I always check for nicks in the line after catching a toothy critter and cut above the nicks to retie. For pan fish, I would just use a small diameter mono over a braid. Try and pair the line to the size of jigs you will use and the size/type of fish you are after. For Crappie you may want 3-4 lb test, for Sunnies, 1-3 lb… if you plan to fish them both frequently and only use 1 rod, I’d get 3 lb test.
For Lake Trout, a 10-20lb test ice braid is ideal with a 3-6 foot long 10lb Fluoro leader. If there is a chance for big Lakers, go 20 lb test. If the fish don’t get over 10lbs in the lakes you fish, go with 10.
