It’s tonight! I hope to have pictures and more info by tomorrow.

There will be lots of self proclaimed Pro’s (like me) down there to help the newbies.

The goal (in my mind) is to have 5 fish over 50″ tagged with transmitters. Other Lake Sturgeon getting the yellow tags is just a bonus.

Thanks to all who plan on attending!

Here’s a few of the results from yesterdays taking effort.

We had between 22 and 25 boats fishing pretty much from below the dam restricted area to just above the Y. Since all boats were anchored, it was not bumper boats like in the spring when everyone is moving around constantly jigging for walleyes.

It looked like a slow day in March. )

There will be a message coming out from the DNR. I’m getting a boat load of messages asking how it went so I thought I would toss out a small update.

The DNR tagged 26 Lake Sturgeon and 3 of those had transmitters implanted.

We were sprinkled on a couple times but it seemed like a great fall afternoon and a nice rainbow showed up.

We’re looking at late August to repeat this event.

    Thanks to all that helped!

Although the fishing might not have been fast, I think everyone had a great time.

Next time we’ll have to have a Spam feed afterwards. )

Brian, You said there was a rainbow? Did you guys tag that and do you know what tributary that came out of. Those are good eating trout. We have got them on lake Michigan before but never on the river.

Yes, there was a rainbow. Brian and his FW drove under it as they motored back to Everts

Thank you to all the sturgeon anglers that took part in last Fridays fishing event below Lock and Dam 3.

As Brian mentioned we had a very successful evening tagging 26 juvenile lake sturgeon including 3 with acoustic transmitters that will allow us to follow their movements for the next 10 years.

I have attached the size information for the fish that were caught last night along with information on what tag type each fish was given. They are listed in the order they came to the tagging boat, and FL (in) in the table refers to Fork Length or the distance from the tip of the snout to the fork in the tail.

We use fork length with sturgeon and eye to fork length with Paddlefish to account for damage to the tips of sturgeon tails and Paddlefish rostrums that can occur over the long lifespans of these fish.

It was good to see so many folks interested in our sturgeon resources in this part of the state, and especially to see those boats that were getting kids involved in sturgeon fishing. It was also wonderful to finally put some faces to the names I see in so many posts here on IDO.

As always if anyone has any questions feel free to contact me at the Lake City office.

Thanks again and stay tuned. Hopefully we can get another event going when there may be more big fish staged below the dam.

It was nice to meet you, Nick.

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions from myself and my daughter.

Let us know if you plan on doing this again and we’ll be there to help.
