Not looking to steal your spots, but does anyone have any tips for lake sturgeon around the DL/ ottertail area? I’m located in Fargo so I’m not looking to go all the way up to the Rainy River for a fish I don’t know how to catch quite yet, but I’ve heard that they’ve been making a comeback and I’ve been looking to give it a try.

First you need to get the right equipment. Here is a great post talking about that. https://www.in-depthoutdoors.com/community/forums/topic/dream-sturgeon-setup/
North woods angling on Youtube has some great videos on how and what to do. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=northwoods+angling+sturgeonI hope FishBlood&RiverMud will chime in. He has way more experience with them than I do.

I guess I’d approach it like I do in the big basin areas of the croix.Look up a thread called boating big sturgeon.
It’ll describe my approach for finding them on sonar and how to fish them.
August 14, 2020 at 2:59 pm #1965233While there are Sturgeon in the Ottertail chain of lakes your chances of catching one is by far greater on the Rainy River. I caught one 40 incher on Rush Lake (which is the next lake north in the chain from Ottertail) last year while fishing Walleye and I’ve heard of a few others in the chain being caught but its not very frequent. They are on a comeback after the obstacles were removed on the Red and Ottertail Rivers. They can now go all the way to Height of Land Lake which is where the Ottertail River starts. Their numbers will only improve with time. If you are going to fish them here I would start in Ottertail Lake. Good Luck.

There’s like 10 lakes upstream of HOL on the OT River system. The headwaters is Big Elbow.
August 20, 2020 at 1:42 pm #1966793Fish below the outlet in the SW corner of Ottertail.
BUT you will be a much happier person to make the trip to Rainy River/LOTWs. More a bigger fish. It’s possible to catch a 50″ in that area but not very likely.
60″ fish are pretty regular on LOTW’s…and once you dance with a 60…you will be spoiled!
