Studding front tires on ATV

Does anyone on here puts studs in the front tires of their ATV’s or SxS ? I run chains on the back but last year on glare ice sometimes I needed 40 acres to turn the darn thing. I thought of trying studs this year and watched a Woody’s video that said only 25 in each tire for a light duty machine.

I do not use chains but studd both front and back tires. They work great, you loose a few but there are plenty in a box when you buy them to studd each knobby on my larger tires with spares. I use them for several seasons before needing to buy a new box.

I just used sheet metal screws in all of my three wheeler tires. Works great. I think I only did two rows in the front for steering and it steers great.

Why not chain the fronts? I do and it works great.

Anyone currently running a chain or stud setup have first-hand experience of what they do to blacktop/asphalt? My UTV’s main job is plowing our driveway. This year I’m setting it up for fishing as well, but as much as I’d like chains/studs, I’m concerned it’s going to do a number on my 1yr old driveway.

I did that last year and I lost a lot of screws. I have a separate set of tires and rims for winter. It scratched up my driveway pretty good where I spun my tires.
I lost a lot of screws when I went fast on the ice too. I may have had too short of screws but I also did not want ones too long. It helps a ton on glare ice for fishing but plowing it just makes it noisier on the pavement.

    Jamin,
I get scratches on my driveway. I have about a 10% grade and it curves right at that area, so if I didn’t have chains I could never push the snow off.
If your driveway is flat you may not need any extra traction.

I have a spare set of front tires/wheels that I studded with hex screws, have to replace a few each season that fall out or wear down but they work great for bare ice. I tried chains on the front but had clearance issues & they tore up the boot on the u-joints. I chain the rear tires but take them off for plowing on concrete.

I don’t use the chains on mine when I’m plowing the chains scratch things up to bad for me. It doesn’t take to long to put them on when I’m ready to go ice fishing. I thought maybe since Woody’s suggested just 25 in each front tire I could put them In and easily take them out if need be.

Thanks for the feedback guys. You know what they say, if it’s too much work, we won’t do it. So swapping wheel sets between plowing and going ice fishing, nor taking chains on and off is going to happen. I’d take them off once and they’d sit in the corner of the garage after that.
I don’t need them for plowing as I only have a slight slope in the driveway but thought they’d be nice on the ice.

This will be my first season using my UTV on the ice so I guess we’ll see how it fares before investing in chains.
