Guys – I love my old Striker suit but I believe it’s equivalent to a Hardwater. Is the Guardian with only 50g ther made warm enough for all conditions? Or do I need to layer heavily?

If I’m understanding the Striker Suits correctly…the flotation alone adds equivalent to 100 grams of Thinsulate Insulation..
That’s a warm suit !!
wiel0059Posts: 59November 17, 2015 at 8:38 am #1577682Doug – I see you got some good answers on another forum. But, don’t bank on the Sureflote adding a ton of warmth, that is not the intention. Striker has a great warmth rating scale that in my testing holds very true. The Guardian is a 5 on that scale. The Predator and Climate Suits are a 7 & 10 respectively. The Hardwater, then, is a 9 warmth (its almost like the Climate with the zip-in liner but no ability to remove it).
In reality, the Climate suit is the Predator jacket with an additional zip-out liner. This means it can be worn as a 7 or 10 warmth generally speaking, which is awesome and why I went with this one. For all winter use, I’d recommend the Predator over the Guardian, if you don’t want to go with the Climate suit…

If you had to guess… or maybe you do know…
What is Strikers 5 rating compared to like the Cabelas Insulated Guideware for warmth ?
Thanks !!
November 17, 2015 at 10:19 am #1577701They really need to feature this or a comparison chart somewhere. Helpful!

Guardian will be a good suit for most conditions. With a warmth rating of 5. The chart you found is a perfect indication, but keep in mind that is without layering. So, with proper layering you would be able to be perfectly comfortable in colder temps.November 17, 2015 at 4:24 pm #1577796I would prefer to save the $120 this year and get a Guardian, but its just nice to know that I’ve been in brutal conditions before in the Hardwater and had no issue.

Hey Dave – I’ll be honest, I have no idea… Doug’s chart is perfect. And as Alec said, this is with no base layering. That shows just how amazingly warm the Striker suits are. I don’t think I could get cold in my Climate jacket if I tried!
November 17, 2015 at 8:36 pm #1577841Man this makes me think the Guardian might be fine. With base layers and performance sweats under it I might be fine

Doug – Good point. Especially if you consider where you are from and how cold it normally is. Say its 0 out, with a solid base layer (Striker actually makes an awesome one that I have – not so tight like a lot of the compression base layers so I don’t feel restricted) and a sweatshirt you’d probably be fine.
Not sure if you open water fish, but it’d also be great for this in Spring / Fall. That is why I love my Climate Suit. I can zip out the liner and it truly is a 3 season jacket. At the end of the day though, no matter which Striker suit you go with, you have the peace of mind that you’ll float which is awesome when on the ice!
November 18, 2015 at 9:04 am #1577921You’ll be fine with the guardian and layering. Buy big.
As mentioned the climate is just more versatile from cool to cold temps.I rarely am wearing the full suit, usually just pieces of it.
November 18, 2015 at 6:35 pm #1578084I gotta tell ya, striker bibs showed up today.
Bought my original suit used from Brad Hawthorne right around the time it hit the market, can see my suit in his videos that year on mille lacs ( back then ). Anyway long story short he never gave me the insulation for the bibs. So the last two seasons (maybe 3) I’ve worn the bibs without it and have been nothing but impressed. I do wear fleece pants in extreme cold.
I digress.
Bibs show up today with insulation of course.
I can tell right off the bat I won’t be needing it much but wow is that going to be warm.Old bibs leak terribly through tough use and served their purpose.
I fish quite a bit and put my suit through a beating day in and day out. I’ve worn it any month of the year. It’s a testament of how good it is. But, then again I paid $250 for my whole suit. And I just paid more than that for the bibs. I know they’ll last 3 seasons, maybe. But you can multiply that by two for most users.
I wore out the original striker LITE suit before that one in less than two seasons. That one was warm enough in must moderately active situations.
November 18, 2015 at 7:14 pm #1578092Hawthorne that Dirty Dog! You should get to drive the Wookie for sure at least once as a result.
If you had you insulated bibs and were warm that’s quite a suit. My Hardwater makes me sweat sometimes

Depending on how easy you get cold, everyone’s different. I’ve used every Striker suit except the Guardian, But I run hot that’s why I take out the removable liners in the Climate suit bibs lol. I’m guessing you will be around the same warmth as the Climate with the liners removed probably a lot more. Even in -40 I never had liners in the Climate bibs, jacket yes. Like I said warmth is relative to you. I know at the last show people were buying the Guardian suit like crazy.
November 20, 2015 at 9:51 am #1578433Just saw the $50 eGift Card with $150 purchase on Gander.
I’m getting the Guardian and layering. My IDO Sweatshirt under with a baselayer should be plenty.
