Has anyone try this… is it really much lighter and better than the original strikemaster bit. Thinking of getting a spare solo head and putting my spare 8″lazer hand auger on it. I’ve heard so much hype about the nils hand auger. Was wondering if anyone try one or the other. Feed backs on either is appreciated.. kinda dont want to spend extra money if I can use what I already have. As far as modification my brother has access to cnc machines to do everything.

I would think the hand auger drill would have an abbreviated lifespan. In the least it may break welds and twist, maybe shear the point where it attaches to head. Hopefully it doesn’t disinigrate and gash your legs. Everyone wants lightweight, if what you want to do is feasible, the manufacturers would be doing it. If you go ahead, I hope the only damage is to the equipment and not any flesh.

Castle-rock-clown you do have a good point. . I haven’t thought of it that way. Perhaps the nils may be a better route as it is made to be attached to the tanaka powerhead.

If the drill is rated for a powerhead I would compare the HP at rpms of the heads you are interested in. I would not stray too far from the power output of the Tanaka.

The honda lite is probably the closest as far as power goes. . Which I is what I have currently. Maybe if i were to do it I could just swap the two. Honda to nils and solo to current strikemaster which is what the honda is running on.

I looked into the same a while ago.
Was looking at adding using my solo head on a hills auger. From what I was told the Nills works on higher RPM than the solo delivers. The Tanaka heads run faster. Have not tested but that is what some Nills users have told me.

I’ve seen the video of nils vs honda lite and the nils beat the honda. I don’t really care about who beats who but was just interested in the weight and cutting effort. I also saw the nils on the solo but I didn’t see any feedback in comparison to the strikemaster bit.

If you like slushy holes by all means go with a nils. My dad has a tanka 8″ nils and it’s the same speed as my pro solo 224 8″. I honestly think any weight savings is negated by all the slush left in his holes. I’m also not sure if it’s really any lighter than my solo?

The Nils bit won’t weigh much, if any, less than the strikemaster you have now.
The reason the Nils was faster than the honda lite is because the Tanaka is turning the bit almost twice as fast. The tanaka 270 gear reduction is 24:1 vs 40:1 for the honda lite. Putting the Nils on the honda motor may be even slower and will be about the same weight.

According to Nils USA the slush thing has been fixed. Really was never a big deal IMO, but either way the squeaky wheel gets the oil I guess. They made the blade an 1/8″ or so smaller diameter so it’s the same size as the flight and now holes are slush free.
