I can get a new one in the box for $300.00. I love the price, but they look like a PITA. Can anyone comment on this unit… Do you have to have it “plugged in” on an external battery source for it to run? No chargeable battery pack?  Any feedback greatly appreciated.

as far as reopening holes you are better off to go with a chipper style blade than a lazer style blade. i will agree i didnt have good luck reopening holes with my electra lazer and i maybe got 15-20 holes if i kept the battery warm before drilling. i upgraded to a lithium lazer and wont look back! drilled over 100′ of ice several times with it last season! noticed that they came out with a chipper style blade option this year. maybe that is more the direction to look imo.

I have a like new Ion posted in the classifieds for $400 TYD with two brand new sets of spare blades. Absolutely love the auger, just upgrading to the Ion X.

Bob is saying it nicely, don’t do it. Hard to believe they still even sell them.

In my Firebrand I have 2 sealed AGM deep cycle batteries with one exposed and in a Minkota battery box. It has 2 large posts for 60 amp delivery and a couple 12v power ports for charging cell phones and electronics. I use it to power my SM Big Volt with 10″ chipper blade. Works like a dream.

The Electra is terrible. I had one and it was painfully slow and, if you had the patience, would only cut about 8 holes before it started to lose power. It put a bad taste in my mouth about electric augers, but I used my brothers Ion last year and it was amazing. It wasn’t as fast as my Lazer Mag, but it was close. I was very impressed and the reverse feature was great for cleaning slush from the holes.
