Strikemaster Collar Bolt

Does anyone off hand know the size of the collar bolt on Strikemasters? I know its a fine thread, but hoping someone knows the size. I’m needing to do a modification to it for a trip up to Winnipeg. The plan is get one that screws all the way thru so I can put a lock nut on the outside. That way it won’t rattle loose up there. Had issues with the standard bolt last year.

Found this on another thread. May want to double check.

Why not just wrap some Coban or electrical tape around the Bolt and opening? I do this on all my augers to ensure the bolt cannot fall out during use.

Same thread, someone recommended this as well.

Thanks Bonawitz, I’ll pick up a couple that diameter tonight and check back.

I’d rather not rely on electric tape for something like that. Winnipeg is hard on gear and the less things that could let you down the better. Plus it’ll be a redundancy with the nut screwed on compared to just being screwed on like normal.

Get a longer bolt and add a nyloc nut to the system. The only threads holding that bolt in are cut into the wall of the auger shaft which I am guessing is 1/8″ thickness at best. If the threads go out because the bolt is loose you may still be up that creek… Adding a nyloc nut IMHO if a good idea to prevent problems. Also remember to have a crescent wrench, everyone should anyways.

Exactly what my plan is. Needed to know the size of the bolt so I’d be able to do this.

    You show 2 different lengths.
    8mmx1.25 X 1.5″ long and
    8mmx1.25 X 30mm long. 30mm is 1.181″.

I posted both because I found two different lengths online, also suggested to double check.

Update….I went with one that was 2″ long and added on a nylon nut on the outside and snugged it up. Will work perfect. Thanks for help!

Anyone know if tightening a bolt/nut on there too tight could be detrimental? Is there supposed to be a little bit of ‘bit play’ in case the bit seizes or something?

Not sure if adding a nut to it is enough to get rid of some of that ‘play’ or not, but just something I was thinking about.

Is the play you’re referring to the slight wobble of the head unit even when the bolt is tight? I noticed this on mine right away and it kind of bugged me at first. If so, I read on another thread somewhere someone said that the slight wobble is a built in safety measure and it’s normal. Others replied saying theirs does the same thing to varying degrees.

Adding the nut is more to get it so the bolt doesn’t rattle loose. Something I’d never thought of till it happened.

These are the best thing to use. Never have to worry about the screw stripping or loosening up, and the auger and motor can be quickly disconnected if needed without tools. Been doing it for at least 15 years without issue.

One of our guys actually tried one of those and found it to be worse. Came disconnected when driving and luckily was able to see it happening, but cracked part of the plastic when the auger head hit the ice. Winnipeg is a different animal is all I can say.
